Anyone gone back to w7?

Ive been using windows 8 for a while now and i do like some parts of it here and there but i still find the apps and metro still very annoying and also i have experienced a lot of games issues, cant even run dirt 3 for some reason on windows 8. Im seriously tempted to go back to windows 7. Whats everyone on atm? any one convince me to stick with 8? i usually prefer to use the latest and etc.. but i just feel ill have a lot less problems with windows 7?

Also is there any actual performance difference between the both whether gaming or software and etc?

I have actually just recently installed Windows 8.1 Update 1 alongside a UI mod software called Classic shell which changes the metro style of into windows 7. It disables the metro UI at start up and logs in just like windows 7 would.

so far I' am really enjoying it and I installed it with a negative view as I did try it before but did not like it.

I would say it is faster overall the boot timings and loading is faster, it can be annoying at times with the UAC kicking in at odd times. Also I find it does not have that premium feel like windows 7 does but that isn't a big deal.

overall I'm happy with it and would keep it as my daily usage OS now but I would now recommend it but only Windows 8.1 with update 1 also with the classic shell software which is free.

also I would download your own anti-virus even the windows defender is built into windows 8.1 it does not have a manual file scanner this time around which Is weird.

that's my view hope it was helpful in some way if possible.

I have to admit, I'm shocked that MSSE isn't being built into the OS as standard.

I expect McAfee etc. would launch their toys out of the pram if it did happen mind.

Does it do virus scanning? I thought it didn't.

[Edit] Oh, it does. Well there you go then, that's my new thing learnt for Friday. :)

One of the first things Microsoft did to improve security in Windows ie Windows Defender built into the Win8 OS,be interesting to see what they do to improve security in Win9.

I'm shocked the other virus scanner companies haven't gone to the EU about it tbh.

Not that they should, but given how hard Opera whinged about IE I would have expected Mcafee to be breaking the doors down.

Defender is a baseline defence,third party AVs offer more in terms of features/protection etc but it's still nice to see Microsoft doing something,just think if XP had built-in AV when it was first released,how many XP users not bothered to install any AV or waited too late to install a third party one,I could say samething about Vista/Win7 but at least Win8 comes with some protection when you install it.

I'm not. The snake oil AV vendors would probably get ripped apart in court. The browser is a critical piece of software because it is the gateway to the world wide web for many people.

I went the other way and took off my copy of Avast! and whilst not ideal there are some registry keys that you can create to get Windows Defender to scan folders and files. Here's a link to an online guide though while there were some typo's in the article itself the comments section had the corrected settings to use.

The keys you add will end up looking like this.
Code:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\WindowsDefender]
@=""
"Icon"="%ProgramFiles%\\Windows Defender\\EppManifest.dll"
"MUIVerb"="Scan with Windows Defender"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\WindowsDefender\Command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Windows Defender\\MpCmdRun.exe\" -scan -scantype 3 -SignatureUpdate -file \"%1\""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\WindowsDefender]
@=""
"Icon"="%ProgramFiles%\\\\Windows Defender\\\\EppManifest.dll"
"MUIVerb"="Scan with Windows Defender"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\WindowsDefender\Command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Windows Defender\\MpCmdRun.exe\" -scan -scantype 3 -SignatureUpdate -file \"%1\""

I have made and saved the keys in a script and also one to remove them if anyone needs/wants them.

Rather than start a new thread - why does MS have to be so difficult? for a project I'm working on I was given a windows 8 (not RT) tablet, so not really having the option of sticking 7 on it and so having a bit of a play and didn't take me long to find that the start menu functionality is all there in 8 beneath the surface without even needing 3rd party tools :| bit of mis-use of the links toolbar, some junctions links to "programdata\microsoft\windows\start menu\programs", etc. and a little shell hacking later and I've basically got the Windows 7 start menu back without using anything not already in 8 :|

What a waste of time and already 10x slicker to work with than the start screen for general use... and this is on a 8" touchscreen.

I'm shocked you find the Start Menu better to use on a tablet, I dislike it for KB&M but I can fully see it's positives when using purely touch based inputs.

Admittedly as I'm basically rebuilding it from misusing ui components I've optimised it for tablet use as I went along but I still find it more efficent than the start screen for most of my use.

Given how much of the functionality is still there I wouldn't be suprised if its all there just disabled on one line of code though not checked the res files for the actual ui template itself.

The only thing I hate about Windows 8 is the lack of start button, its just plain stupid that MS got rid of it. But there are various mods to add a start button, so thats the problem solved.

For me, Windows 8 runs faster than Windows 7, both loading and playing games, and all of my software and hardware is supported in Windows 8. So now I have a start menu in Windows 8 I'll stick with it.

I find performance wise it depends a lot - high end i7s don't really seem to get that big advantage but "8 core" AMD CPUs and i5s seem to benefit from the better multi-threading a fair bit especially in certain games. Likewise if you have fast HDD/SSDs the performance difference is minimal but for those on low to medium end storage devices there is quite a decent speed up.

I'm disliking 8 more and more though with actually having to use it a bit - rather than just a bit of quick playing about - loads of stuff they seem to have gone "ooops we should implement a feature doing X - find some free space in the UI and shove it in there" rather than well thought out features and quite a lot of "fixing" things that weren't broke. Not to mention the window borders and controls just look bland and ugly.

I'm not bothered eitherway about old Start menu,I just adapt regardless of Windows or Linux,the old Start button menu is coming back to Win8.1 in Update 2 which I believe is September so that should make you happy.

I'm using Win8.1 as default without any Start button menu mod.

End of the day no Windows OS is hard to use IMHO maybe that's why I find it easy in general.

Actually starting to really hate the metro UI - whats so wrong with having close, back and options buttons? can't even alt+f4 on a touchscreen, swiping downwards doesn't seem like the best possible option to me :S (not to mention having used android so much I'm instinctively reaching for the back softkey then going oh yeah gotta swipe which for some reason half the time brings up the options bar even though I'm swiping the other way).
