Back on topic.....

Phil spencer needs to go, and then Microsoft need to get in someone who knows what they're doing, preferably some one who is not an American chest puffing douche.

Spencer has so far been undoing many of the mistakes made by the company under the leadership of his predecessor, he seems to know what he's doing just fine.

How much system power was set aside for Kinect? Will it's exclusion mean more power for devs in regards to gaming performance?

I think it was 10%. But, I'm sure I read something like the devs were able to harness some/all of this power already, after a recent change in the SDK (presumably in games not making use of Kinect, whereas at launch it was reserved regardless).

It was 10% GPU power in games and when you consider the XBO GPU is anything from 33-100% less powerful than PS4 depending on which part of GPU (compute/fillrate/shader/texturing etc) that 10% isn't a lot.

Kinect will still need some resources reserved for the operating system for those who have paid for it and will still use it.

Only thing I can think of is now you don't need gold for apps, wow!

For all that chest puffing, was expecting more tbh

The 10% isnt just gpu thought it was the whole system, the 10% includes voice control, snap as well as the kinect features. Surely they will allow voice control via headset? cant be that hard to implement it.

Why are people expecting this 10% power back? Surely kinectless or not it has to stay reserved for people who do have it, kinect imo was a flop on 360 and them forcing it on people was never going to work I'm glad it's gone, when I do get one eventually I sure as he'll will likely never buy into kinect anyway

Wonder if you could use one of those little iphone mini microphones like this one -

Quite a few plugged these into their DS4 for Ps4 voice commands without needing the headset plugged in or a camera.. Saw it over on reddit.

Not used one myself, but never having an X1 or seen the pad in much detail, would it be possible?

i personally think MS should have removed the kinect form the start, but they went with it, now they are removing it and even though its late hopefully it doesn't mean the end of the kinect system, but means someone like myself can pick up an X1 later on for the Forza and Halo series etc and not have the peripheral that I'd in all honesty never use.

Ok, it does seem a little harsh to those that purchased the early systems and have kinect in the box, but means those that didn't really want it, can unplug it and know future updates will mean less need for kinect for the dash boards.

Don't see the issue myself. I think its a good move, £349 brings the price inline with PS4, and even though technically the Ps4 is more powerful, most base their purchases on price.

Think this would have been a great move by MS if they removed the kinect and made the price point 299.

It would have not only pacify those who wanted a sku without kinect, but also would undercut the PS4.

As it stands at 349 without a game, it isn't really a saving. If you take the titanfall bundle at rrp, if you buy the one without kinect, and a game, you are paying the same price.

I think there will be a price drop on this before release as I think the preorders for it will be very slow.

I don't think voice commands work through the headset, do they? If they do then it would surely work.

Perhaps with kinect disconnected the power could be routed to other resources? I really don't know but I agree that some people will keep kinect so there has to be a reserve in place. It depends if this reserve is dynamic or not, I guess.

Didn't the Sony PSP have like options to turn of wifi etc to free up system resources for some games, not sure but maybe MS could re root resources if the game doesn't require kinect it gets turned off if detected as the game starts leaving you with just the game, gamepad and no kinect during gameplay.. freeing up the 10% or so kinect uses - could work??

how that'll work for xbox record - don't know. Seems plausible to do, but maybe not as easy as it seems on paper?

As I understand it the 10% GPU reserve which MS announced would be freed up months ago and has probably already happened was a portioned off part of the GPU reserved for games to properly utilise Kinect.

There will still be some system overhead which needs to remain in place for Kinect to function in normal circumstances, whether a person uses Kinect or not.

I am happy to support MS in bringing innovation.

I think where they have gone wrong is trying to sell Kinect as an interface for the system / games where it's just not powerful enough at present. In 5 years it might work but the pickup of gestures and movements is still not good enough to replace the current method of input - although the voice stuff is very cool and helpful at certain times.

Xbox fitness is probably the only Kinect camera feature i have seen so far that is unique and useful.

Honest question:

All you guys banging on about Kinect being amazing before this announcement and it's super powers for things like fitness, etc. What do you think the future now holds for Kinect?

I knew it was going to flop from the start but are you all now convinced or do you think it will still be a great success?

"Xbox On"

"Xbox go to....."

"Xbox record that"

"Xbox go to friends"

"Xbox snap....."

jsut a few, but those commands alone make the XO feel pretty good to use, no mucking about with buttons etc, I think Kinect will still be fine, certainly those most advanced thing about this gen, jsut needed a really killer game for it from the outset, that we didnt get.

iirc the PS4 can also do all of that either through the mic or ps eye, I don't think it can turn on though but once it's on it can do all that voice command stuff.

If you have the PS app on your phone/tablet though you can turn it on using that and then just use the mic/eye for voice commands so no need to touch a controller or the console itself.

If voice commands is really the future for kinect then IMO i'd rather do that through a £2 mic than a £100 peripheral even though it would be easier to use, I'd rather stick that extra £98 towards games.

I hope MS compensate early adopters by giving them some Kinect games for free or something. They should have had a kinectless version from the start, would have helped sales considerably I imagine.

I havnt seen mention of the Sony Eye being able to do anythign of the sort.

Can it control the Tv amp cable box independently and volumne etc?

What ive listed their is a tiny amount of what it does, I feel its a waste of time trying to explain it to someone that doesnt even know about it.

Same can be said about the lightbars in the PS4 controllers....what do they do without the VR head unit now?

The ps4 camera Mic can be used for voice commands. it's been well known since launch. ps4 voice commands are not as widely used in the system as they are for x1 with Kinect. but they do work, and work well.

Recent updates to the ps4 firmware have seen voice commands increased, and you don't need the camera, a simple iPhone Mic plugged into the controller will work just as well.

the light bar on the ds4 controller has, been used in games like infamous and tomb raider to indicate hits to the body or health levels or infamous it goes red the more evil you become. and the playroom uses it a lot...
