Sony stopping pc production

I truly believe Apple's success in part is due to the crappy laptops that were available in the 2000s. They were grossly under powered and frequently died, leaving many jaded. Nowadays the power and quality has risen. I see little reason to not go budget.

It doesn't seem that long ago that people I know would ask my opinion on a £300-400 laptop and my answer would be that it is rubbish. For years the cheap laptops were of a terrible spec. They could get a much better desktop for the same price (unless they were using it mobile of course) Lately, its not so clean cut. You can get a decent laptop for cheap enough.

People always miss the point in laptop/tablet. No one is saying that a tablet can do what a laptop can so that's the way forward etc but the fact s that a big % of people were buying a laptop to browse argos and read emails etc.

Shame to see but any money in laptops and desktops are quickly shrinking. Dell, Lenovo and HP are dominating the market in the Business world. While Apple are growing in the consumer world.

I used to work for Evesham Technology and well they went in 2008ish and was sold to the Time/Tiny Group. Even with the popularity of the company and British status it still made huge losses.

Offshoot, but last year I worked for Time. The conversations I had with senior management about the Evesham takeover would make you shudder.

And yes, Time group is alive and well... :o

I think every ~£299 bracket laptop is the same components in a different case so reality it really doesn't matter what you buy.

Its like the graphics card market, all essentially the same just different warranties and stickers.

for one the keyboard feels nicer, gets to any part of the page faster than any trackpad. So I would rather a keyboard and no mouse than a trackpa personally.

lol
No, it can't.

I'm sad to see Sony go. I was lucky enough to spec my own departments tech and we have all VAIOs. The 16.4in screens were a great sized laptop for power users. Sadly they did ruin the brand by also making some terrible cheap junk with VAIO slapped on the back. We have a micro netbook as part of our lightweight presentation kit. 1gb ram, atom, windows 7 starter. Not a great advert for a premium brand.

Saying that, if I'm ever out the office, I take my macbook. It's not about raw power. There are very few laptops you can carry with you, work on all day and not have to worry about carrying a charger.

So how do you move windows around the screen? Do you scroll using the arrow keys?

People who tab around a window or carry a Bluetooth mouse with their laptops are just confirming that the trackpad that comes with their laptop is garbage, not that trackpads are pointless.

So you tab around until the relevant task bar icon is selected, then hit alt, arrow key to the 'Move' option, hit enter and then use the arrow keys to move the window around?

And you find that more productive than a trackpad?

errr. certain parts arent. but the trackpad as a whiole is a horrible thing to use. Mice are far superior and I said I would prefer a keyboard. Since me and trackpads dont work well together.

its a personal preference

You're right, most trackpads are garbage. My point was that this doesn't mean the trackpad can't be a decent form of input, but you're right I tend to reach for the mouse if I use a Windows laptop.

I have a trackpad for my desktop so I'm the opposite end of the spectrum to you. I'm far too productive with gestures to go back to a mouse.

the closest I have is a Wacom Tablet, but yeah if push comes to shove I will use one. That being said, I have not had a fond memory of touchscreens, especially with phones, seeing as how I can only afford cheap **** meaning my gesture skills are quite low.

windows trackpads arent too bad these days, at least on certain products with decently sized ones. i've not used enough mac ones to definitively say they're better but i could beleive it to be the case.

tbh, as has been mentioned build quality is sorely lacking on too many windows laptops. it seems for folk who want a solid machine but are prepared to compromise on spec to get a decent price there isn't much available. or at least not that i can find.

yeah the line between quality and affordability gets finer every hour. its harder and harder these days to find a middlegroud as far as whole pcs are concerned, even some individual components are filled with buggy/ defective horribleness.

Windows trackpads still don't compare. I use both daily. I've said before, one of the best buyouts Apple ever made was Fingerworks for their touch tech. The sentelic trackpad drivers and software are very very poor compared to Apple ones. And on Linux they're even worse. The Sentelic trackpad on my Gigabyte laptop is absolutely hateful. I bought a small usb mouse so I didn't have to use the trackpad. The only redeeming quality of the software is the fact you can completely disable the thing.
