Wolfenstein: The new order breaks 2gb

Apparently people have discovered the issue and it's not something fixable with a patch/driver, the Ultra preset uses ultra textures but also disables texture compression by default, that's why it's destroying 2GB cards. When HARDOCP created a custom profile mimicking ultra they mimicked that too.

From what other users have said* you can set a custom profile with ultra textures and compression on and it will then run on a 2GB card (if it has the grunt) and the compression on/off difference is not visually noticeable at 1080p.

*can't test it myself as I don't own a 2GB card.

yup, if it's running out of vram then it's down to crap coding rather than the game engine being too demanding - games great fun but wont go down as a graphically demanding title

Biggest problem is lack of SLI support running on a single GK104 chip is a bit slow.

I like the way reviewers are complaining that it uses an old version of OpenGL, the last time an iD engined game came out running cutting edge OGL features it ended up having massive issues because despite advanced warning Nvidia/ATi barely had beta drivers available, to the point where it pretty much killed the game, I can't think why Bethesda don't want a repeat of that lol.

Compressed textures not equal to uncompressed textures though and how would 2gb users be able to compare that there is no visual difference if they can't run uncompressed textures@1080p, are they guessing there is no difference?

I believe the general test is for somebody with a 3GB or higher card to compare what it looks like with compression on/off. (Not trying to sound smart **** there, just couldn't think of a way to phrase it that didn't).

*EDIT*

For reference at 2560x1080 with an overclocked GTX780 and a 4.5GHz 4930k, I see no difference between TC on or off and I have very good eyesight.

:p

Can any one confirm this is the case?

Becuase just speaking to my friend in the office who is running 2x 660's he says he can set ultra settings ingame.

(The VT cache is set to high tho)

But is it not running on the ID engine same as Rage? So how can it be a port when it was an engine made for PC...

Not to forget the game was made on a pc lol I love it when people say console port but forget the fact every single game is made on a pc. They only get ported to the console not other way around.

I bought game but not played yet no Internet in new house.
But from what I have seen/read on its thread section it's a very good looking game.

you actually can - by selecting CUSTOM and then setting the same settings as the ultra preset

Haven’t played it so take my opinion with a pinch of salt, but from what I read the game auto detects your setup and is made to run at 60fps (scaling settings)

nope, it locks the fps to maximum of 60 regardless of any other settings, and by default it is set on medium - there is no detecting and changing of settings based on hardware

But is it not running on the ID engine same as Rage? So how can it be a port when it was an engine made for PC...

it is using OpenGL 3.2 (PS3 uses a version of OpenGL ES 1.0 which is similar), it locks the fps to a max of 60, it uses lots of flash up icons telling you which button to press... all console concessions
it is also released cross platform on the same day, so it is clear that they concentrated on the console versions first and then just did the minimum to make it work on PC

just because the original engine was originally designed for PC, does not mean that THIS GAME was designed from the ground up primarily for PC

You can write c++ code in notepad, it doesnt mean the game runs in notepad

You lack comprehension of the way it actually works if you think this is the case. A lot of games that people call "console ports" are actually produced using console development kits. Of course one still physically uses a PC to build the game but just because it is built and debugged on a PC does not mean that it is built for the PC, hence the fact that they're called "console ports".

I've been playing this game the last couple of days and I can honestly say it's good fun. I have my graphics set to Ultra and gameplay is smooth, however it still doesn't look 'awesome'. It looks ok is about all I can say. I'm guessing this is down to the textures not being that great. What counts though is gameplay. If like me, you're an FPS genre fan, then you'll love it. It has all the classic elements you want in an FPS game of this type.

I don't have SLI and the lack of SLI support from day one seems a bit naff, but maybe they will patch that in. It doesn't strike me as a console port from my experience playing it.
