**THE AMD DRIVERS THREAD**

Im so annoyed with AMD drivers the bane of my life, every time a new one comes out it ****s with windows, ive tried all the uninstalls the clean wipes it always fails and i have to go into the windows device manager and update from there. They are a joke. Its the sole reason i am trying to sell my cards. Had enough of the inconsistencies.

What version of Windows are you running?, sounds more like an issue with that than AMD drivers, could be wrong mind, but not come across an issue like this before.

Over the last year i've built around 7 systems which included AMD cards ranging from 7870-7950-7970s-270x-280x-290x and not had any issues installing the cards.

You using DDU to uninstall all drivers?

hi bud, using windows 8.1 seems to be no end of a problem, also get tearing on the screen as well as its crossfire. To say im annoyed is an understatement.

And yeah used that and AMD even bought out a new tool tried that as well.

Strange, Window 8.1 is what i've been using on the systems too, i will say though is that my cousin installed latest drivers recently and used that AMD removal tool, it wrecked his windows install and the only fix was to start from scratch again.

If he used the old one (which was for windows 7 only) they do that.

They now have one from Windows 8/.1 on the main drivers page :)

think you'll find all drivers are the same really there is a tool for CC thats different but even tghe new 290 use the same drivers.

AMD uninstaller broke my win8 install as well. To be fair though if id read it before using it it did say Windows 7 only lol.

I have had a few issues with windows becoming corrupt and around the same time i was using "AMD uninstaller", now I just use DDU.

When will people learn not to use amd driver remover? You guys do know it was never meant to be used for a GPU removal tool don't you?
It is there for anyone going from amd to Intel and is used to remove everything amd. So if you have amd chipset, USB etc you will brick your windows by using it.

Stick with software that is meant for gpu removal only like DDU. Talking about DDU I just run it and then install new driver.

I can field this one.

The 7xxx/2xx owners have had their BF4 Mantle optimizations implemented. Any further improvements for those cards must come from EA/Dice. Look at Thief and Starswarm as prime examples. Big gains for 7xxx/2xx cards on those applications, but not so with BF4? Why is that? It's an application issue.

A little annoying that every game has to be optimised separately for each GPU (or at least each version of GCN). Also odd that they choose the version with the least amount of customers to do first. Surely there are more 7850/7870/7950/7970/7990/270X/280/280X users than 260X/290/290X users?

Is there some indication for future games regarding which cards Mantle works or has been optimised for?

Only a small part comes down to the driver. The devs coding it are responsible for the rest. There's only two versions of GCN. For whatever reason Dice just have not got as such big gains from GCN 1.0 as they have from GCN 1.1. I still get pretty nice gains with my GCN 1.0 card though, just not as much as i do with my GCN 1.1 cards. Thankfully this is not the case in Thief or Starswarm. Its up to /EA/Dice to improve performance further. Mantle will work for both cards regardless, the level of optimization will depend on the developer.

Think it's more to do with looking into the future and not the past.

Sorry, yes, meant that it was a little annoying that every game has to be optimised separately for each GPU (or at least each version of GCN) by the developer. Also odd that they (AMD and DICE?) choose the version with the least amount of customers to do first.
Also, there are only 2 version of GCN now, unless you know that AMD are never going to release another version of GCN?
The more GCN versions there worse this could get, in theory.

280X is past and 290X is future?

I don't think we'll see any radical changes to GCN, so its here to stay for a long time. Its been a big success overall with gamers and developers alike. Mantle was created with GCN1.1 in mind. It makes sense to use the latest version i think. Hopefully Dice can work on 1.0, but Dice being Dice, lets not hold out too much hope. :D

Thief Mantle crossfire soon. I hope its not a letdown. I hope it offers me the same level of performance that BF4 Mantle crossfire offers. I know the game does not need it, but it will be nice for the bench thread. :p

BF4 still crashes for me as soon as I use Mantle. :(

Also GCN doesn't have to change much, the changes between 1 and 1.1 seem to be enough to require separate optimisations.

Any idea when for the DX11 or Mantle version.

Catalyst 14.6 will also provide performance boost to Watch Dogs, Thief and Murdered Soul Suspect (which is not yet released). You should expect 25-28% better performance in Watch Dogs with the new drivers. Catalyst 14.6 also has new CrossFire profiles specificly for WD. AMD claims it will provide up to 99% scaling to Watch Dogs.

I'm guessing that the Thief steam update will hit after the new AMD drivers arrive tomorrow. I don't know specifically when, just been told its very soon.

How do you people remove your old drivers when installing new ones?

I used to just use the inbuilt driver removal thing that comes with the drivers....but some said that doesn't remove everything.

Then I used that DDU program and it messed up my computer or something as I ended up with blue screen issues all the time and lock ups in videos.

Formatted the PC and reinstalled windows and its fine now.
