Coil Whine / Capacitor Squeal

Whats everyone elses experiance of this?

I have had it in two cards both were extremely loud and noticeable which I ended up RMA'ing.

What do you guys normally do?

Curious :)

I thought you RMA'd your cards?

I did they were credited and I got a 780Ti.

It has some coil whine but im not sure if this is to do with me not having Vsync on in certain games?

However when they do whine they whine like someone is trying to kill a crocodile with a Noctual 140 fan xD.

Eitherway this is not about my current card :p just wondering overall.

Hi there

I have seen the videos, coil whine is a very grey area as the manufacturers don't usually class it as a fault.

Its down to the retailer who then take the chance of sending it back to the manufacturer for replacement / credit under an RMA.

Coil Whine doesn't effect a cards performance or longevity in any shape or form.

I know it can be annoying but quite a lot of high end cards do this.

Even my card at home whines under load

Only ever experienced this on ATI/AMD cards, never had an Nvidia card with terrible whine.

Mine is dreadfully awful (MSI R9 290)

Edited: Same as above

Hey Bailey this is just a general question not a dig at the card I have at all.

Trying to see what everyone elses situation is like because It only happens at the moment to me when Vsync sync is off in certain games that will push the card to 4 or 500 fps.
I am just wondering if thats a common theory :).

Hi guys,

I think the coilwhine happens generally when Vsync is off and cards are alowed to go to very high Fps.

Example: 500 Fps and above for Eve in my situation or 1000 fps in league of legends.

There are some games where I get a tiny bit of whine but nothing major like in bf4 but the MAJOR whine only happens in game where the fps is in the 1000's or 500's.

In league with Vsync limited to 80Fps I get no coil whine for example.

The vast majority of graphics cards I've tested over years have some level of coil whine when the FPS is very high.

Ive just noticed this and tested it over a few games which I normally Vsync due to fps in the 500 plus range and there is no whine what so ever with Vsync on.

There is only whine when Vsync is off and I allow the fps to go above 300/500 or in the thousands.

I think that is literally it!

We should start a Vsync awareness thread.

I've tried Vsync and frame limiters.

Vsync stopped the whine, but on some games (not all), there is a considerate amount of input lag to the point its unplayable. So not a great solution.

I've tried a frame limiter, but while the whine volume is lower, the pitch is still in cat scaring territory.

Is coil whine something that has always been around?

That's a genuine question btw, because it seems rife at the moment with high-end cards, but I don't recall it being an issue years ago. What was it like going back say 3 years? Or further - 6 years even?

I have only experienced it on cards in the past 3-4 years or so.

I have a Sapphire 290 Vapor-X and that makes no noise, but the two Tri-X samples I had did have faint coil whine that got louder when overclocked more.

Does it? Do you not get screen tear through not using Vsync?

I don't notice any screen tearing in the games that I play.

Quite a few games I'll just cap my FPS in game to the same as my monitor refresh rate anyway, resulting in zero input lag.
