Next Upgrade Thoughts

Afternoon

Seriously considering my next upgrade as I approach the one year anniversary of this build. Despite my outdated signature, my current system is as follows:

Intel i7 4770K
8 GB Memory 1600Mhz
1 x MSI GTX 770 2GB
MSI Z87-GD65 Motherboard
Corsair Carbide 540 Case
Few SSD & HDD

I'm really toying with the idea of upgrading the GPU, but not entirely sure what my next best upgrade would be. Having 2GB of VRAM at the moment seems a bit low, but even the Titans and 780 Ti seem to only have 3GB...

Any thoughts?

Get a whole new pc, it's terrible. How dare you use a system for a whole year without upgrading it.....

Get a 295 of Titan Z and be done with it..... To be honest you should wait till the end of this year for a gpu as going to a 290x or 780/ti isnt really worth it right now personally.

Are you serious???

The 780 and 780Ti is currently the sweet spot for 4K. Admitidly 4K isnt taking off very quickly, but they are far superior to AMD cards. Cooler, use less power and more reliable <---Only seem to hear about the AMD faults however!

What benefits will I see from faster RAM though? :p

I've thought about waiting, but I'm assuming the new 8XX range will just be rebrands of what's already available?

You will see no benefit to faster ram, except for extending your e-peen ;)

Better GPU is the only thing that would potentially be worth upgrading, but only if you need it.

Otherwise you could always get aesthetic stuff, like colour coded braided cables for the PSU or something.

I wouldn't bother upgrading the ram unless you're partial to a bit of benchmarking. The performance difference in day to day usage between 1600/2133MHz will be negligible.

Not entirely true!!

Faster RAM will give you a more efficient and effective system, Haswell also prefers the faster RAM.

I would still recommend the 6GB 780 if you really want to upgrade, but some of your monitors in surround :D

Then if you run out of puff later on new stuff will be out.

My 7990 runs BF4 and everything else perfectly fine

In most things, the difference is negligible tbh, especially games. Unless you have some benchmarks that say otherwise?

This is all very tempting.

I guess the only reason I have considered the upgrade is for the extra VRAM as I've heard that Watdogs has maxed out the 3GB of a 780. Is it relatively easy to clock the above mentioned 780 up to Ti speeds, and will the performance be similar?

I'm not in a big rush to upgrade the RAM, I think the performance gain will be negligible compared to a better GPU.

Snips, yes I am serious. I have a 780 and the only way to get 6fps or more on a single card at 1440p is to turn off AA. Watch Dogs, even though not greatly optimised, uses the full 3gb of memory.

Of course if you want to sli 2x6gb 780 that would be a good choice. As for AMD failing all the time, they both have similar failure rates. I have been with nvidia for the last 5 years but when people **** each company off saying "my dads bigger than your dad" its a bit sad.

Both do great cards, both have good and bad points. But at this moment in time unless you have plenty of spare cash, a 770 is fine for now.

As for watch dogs being a pile of poo coding wise.... Lets all remember how shockingly bad GTA IV was! Things will hopefully improve with patches!

Wndsr, what resolution you playing at?

I guess so. There are some times when it seems a bit stuttery or doesn't do as many FPS as what I would like, but to be fair that could just be the game.

such a Noob

looking at what you got, I'd bin that 770, all its good for ;) get another 8GB RAM to go with your existing quota, a 1200W or higher PSU and go QuadFire (trifire if your board wont take 4 cards) with a bunch of those mining cards you have lying around.
