I got a vuaxhall astra and i want to make the exhuast louder what can i do? do i need whole new exhuast? or just a backbox or a muffer? im not 100% what a muffer is on a car but i read up about it

For a start, i hate grammar Nazis but it has to be done. Its vauxhall and Muffler which is a silencer or back box in English and Irish English, according to Wikipedia.

now tell me, and be honest are you 17 and want to "chav" up your astra? or is there another reason you want to make it louder?

I think they sell them at your local McDonalds. Small engined cars with oversized exhausts seem to congregate there frequently.

Louder is faster, but on the edge you are out of control.

Slight edit of the classic line from Days of Thunder, but being serious, why do you want it louder?

If you want more noise, an induction kit will give you increased noise on acceleration, but with no drone at speed.

If you want a more sporty rasp, a replacement back box will be sufficient. I think its Irmisher (?) that do that for Vauxhall as standard, so you can probably find them on eBay for a decent price.

Usually people have louder exhausts fitted to improve performance (they are louder due to less noise suppression, bigger bore, whatever), and they don't go louder for any other reason...ish.

Buy the exact same exhaust your car currently has, drill holes the entire length of it, fit it, hella loud. Come MOT time, put your non-drilled exhaust back on.

He needs the louder exhaust so he can hear it over his banging Kenwood headunit, sub, 6x9s and new door speakers.

It will match up with his badman blackout tints too.

That's assuming he actually got all the above following those threads.

Sigh at the replies to this...

You will be better off on an Astra specific forum however all you need is a backbox.
It wont be worth the money buying anything more unless your Astra is a higher power turbo charged variant.

Look at ones from the larger companies or well tested brands (Astra forum should help with this).

if you want to chav it up and make it louder, get the center box removed and fit a straight through pipe
