Prostitutes

You keep mentioning this small number of prostitutes you know who are happy/don't have too bad a life/whatever. But what about the wider landscape where it's not so rosy? You're just talking about one extreme, whilst ignore the rest, no? What you're saying is bordering on meaningless, if it's not set within the wider context of prostitution in general.

self employed in call out call escorts make up a very large percentage of of the uks sex workers.

UK - pimps, brothels, people trafficking, horrific violence, rape and so forth.

this is the extreme minority.

I have before.

One year in Ibiza our hotel was just down the road from a brass house, we had to walk past it every time we went out and came back from a night out. Always had a couple of girls outside shouting 'Hey baby want sex?!' At every bloke that walked past.

The answer was always no thanks, until one particularly messy night out :p

Vaguely remember staggering by back to the hotel, hearing ' want sex' and thinking yes, yes I do :p

Long story short, I was way to drunk to finish so it was a big old waste of 60 euros :D

Well, no, I wouldn't say it's perfectly legal. Obviously you can use prostitutes without breaking the law, but I think it's disingenuous in the extreme to ignore all sorts of awful, illegal stuff involved in prostitution in the UK - pimps, brothels, people trafficking, horrific violence, rape and so forth.

That is far more likely in other countries where it is far easier.

There are two basic laws for the UK, no brothels (technically no more than 1 working girl in a property) and no getting it on with someone who is being forced.

Pimps isn't really a "thing", particularly for high class escorts. At least not in London. As Tefal has said, many are simply self employed very balanced people who are earning way WAY more money than the majority of people on this forum.

The ones in Amsterdam do look incredibly fit, but for me it's just a bit revolting. I could never pay a professional lady of the night for her wares.

As we were wandering around Amsterdam you'd occasionally see some overweight sweaty guy come out from one of the doors with his glasses all steamed up and a ****less grin on his face; followed shortly by a now not-so-appealing looking bikini clad blonde who would then position herself in her usual spot at the window, under the red light.

No thanks!

I wonder if they employ any LEAN / Six-Sigma processes to improve throughput?

EDIT: Just to reiterate - in my opinion illegal prostitution is just plain wrong on many levels as it is much more likely to be exploitative/dangerous, but if you're in a place where it is legal, controlled and you're willing to sell it and buy it legally, who am I to judge?

I can see that there are reasonable numbers of woman working in the sex industry who do so because they chose to, like the woman cited by Tefal. However I also believe there are large numbers of woman working in the sex industry who have found themselves in such a position because they have been trafficked, have drug/alcohol problems, or have 'boyfriends' coercing them into working, and these woman are most certainly exploited.

As someone accessing the services of these woman I think there is a lot one could do to reduce the risk of participating another persons exploitation. In general woman working the streets or out of back alley massage parlours are at greater risk of exploitation than the high end escort you contact online. One is significantly higher paid than the other, has a greater autonomy in choosing their clients than the other.

As with any other product or service on sale, the consumer has a choice to make. Are they willing to be complicit in the expolitation of another person in order to procure what they seek as cheaply as possibly or are they prepared to accept it's an expensive product in order to ensure as far as possible that everyone involved is treated with respect, is well paid, and well supported in their working environment.

That's true if you're buying mince or sex. Though I accept the ethical imperatives involved in the two vary greatly.

To answer the OPs question - I've never used the services of a professional sex worker, and never would. I think of sex as a thing that happens organically between 2 people and contriving to make it happen on a more than rudimentary level seems alien to me

Was very tempted while over in magaluf last year, a few of them really were gorgeous, but the thought of god knows how many blokes being there before me put me off.

I also noticed (in Hamburg at least) that one woman closed the curtain on a guy who was fat, steeming and in fancy dress. This leads me to believe that they can pick and choose who they want and maybe also charge what they want depending on what a client looks like?

I could be totally wrong but do some just hire the windows for a night / week and charge clients what they like based on what they think they can get out of them? There was also a different street where there were not a pretty women - sort of like the Old kent road next to Mayfare.

In Amsterdam I remember a rather large black pro asking 3 of us at 7am for "all 3 same time €40"

Whats this, the male prostitute street?

What I also found strange was that no women were allowed down the prostitute street  Lesbians allowed?

that's odd - they're allowed in Amsterdam... tis rather fun/surreal to wander around

we sat in a coffee shop one side of a the canal and while drinking watched some shifty looking bloke go from window to window with a small pull along suitcase... god knows what he was asking the girls but he got turned away from each window he stopped at and got a few angry reactions from them...

After becoming single a couple of years ago, after a long distance relationship, I went to one here in London, that I found online, simply to see what it was like. Had been to Amsterdam a few times already but even though a few friends had, I never did while I was there. Anyway she was a Spanish girl, came over to earn some extra cash doing what she was doing...and to be honest was a bit disappointing :p

Couple years ago now I was in Thailand...got with a couple of 'working girls' so I guess they would count as prostitutes...but to be honest every girl over there is a secret hoe lol... and they are way better over there than here :)

I wouldn't go with one as it just seems seedy and perverted to me, I also don't like the thought that multiple people would have been inside them that day :S
just seems like boning a her fridge after someone left the door open all night and the goods have started to spoil in the summer heat.

I'll pass thanks.

It's pretty shocking that you can get sex for 50-100 quid seems like such a cheap price but it would appear to be the going rate according to a certain adult work website.

No, prostitution is modern slavery for most of the women who practice it. Cases such as "self-employed" college students who get easy money for not much work and little risk are so rare they barely show up in most studies. The reality is gruesome:

'The average age of entry into prostitution is 13 years (M.H. Silbert and A.M. Pines, 1982, "Victimization of street prostitutes, Victimology: An International Journal, 7: 122-133) or 14 years (D.Kelly Weisberg, 1985, Children of the Night: A Study of Adolescent Prostitution, Lexington, Mass, Toronto).'

'Estimates of the prevalence of incest among prostitutes range from 65% to 90%. The Council for Prostitution Alternatives, Portland, Oregon Annual Report in 1991 stated that: 85% of prostitute/clients reported history of sexual abuse in childhood; 70% reported incest.'

'90% of prostituted women interviewed by WHISPER had pimps while in prostitution (Evelina Giobbe, 1987, WHISPER Oral History Project, Minneapolis, Minnesota). '

'About 80% of women in prostitution have been the victim of a rape. Prostitutes are raped, on the average, eight to ten times per year. They are the most raped class of women in the history of our planet. " (Susan Kay Hunter and K.C. Reed, July, 1990 "Taking the side of bought and sold rape," speech at National Coalition against Sexual Assault, Washington, D.C. ) '

'85% of prostitutes are raped by pimps. (Council on Prostitution Alternatives, Portland, 1994) '

'Prostitution is an act of violence against women which is intrinsically traumatizing. In a study of 475 people in prostitution (including women, men, and the transgendered) from five countries (South Africa, Thailand, Turkey, USA, and Zambia):

62% reported having been raped in prostitution. 73% reported having experienced physical assault in prostitution. 72% were currently or formerly homeless. 92% stated that they wanted to escape prostitution immediately. (Melissa Farley, Isin Baral, Merab Kiremire, Ufuk Sezgin, "Prostitution in Five Countries: Violence and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder" (1998) Feminism & Psychology 8 (4): 405-426)'
