 Does look very nice and makes me want to buy a snazzy new car. I know its a courtesy, but what's the MPG readout currently?

Low grade climate control on a car like this ?

It's the cheaper version though with no temperature display. The kind of unit BMW fit in base model 1 Series.

There is a lot of this kind of stuff on the A6, worst being the standard information display that's a monochrome display that looks like it came from a 2004 A6.

I do like the A6, especially the Estate but the price tag can be a bit daunting.

That said, as anyone seen the new A4 Estate, they seem to have made the boot smaller creating more leg room (not completely sure). More of a direct competitor for the BMW 3 Series Estate now. Makes me wonder if I would go for the A6 over an A4 now ...probably not.

It has. But at least in the latest generation (E90 vs B8 platforms), the A4 has been noticeably bigger. I'm quite sure if I had kept my B8 instead of getting my E91, I wouldn't have needed the swap (so much) to the 5 series sized platform. Whereas the E91 was just too small for my current requirements.

The A4 has always been a.direct competitor for the 3 Series

Yes it has been, though the 3 Series always had slightly more rear passenger leg space and less boot space. Not a massive thing but the newer Audi model seems to follow the same trend.

Audis are all about the options list!

Which is great if you are buying a new one but when you buy used cars you must rely on other peoples selections on options list and it's surprising how many people don't realise or don't care about the little things that make all the difference.

Beemers aren't much better, most of the ones I looked at needed or had options just so the headlights looked OK, and the base sat-nav screen looks horrible...the big 10" one look pretty amazing though, but then the Audi Googlemaps one looks the biz as well. The think I didn't like about the 5 series in general (aside form the diabolical customer service in our local dealer) was that they look so pedestrian. I preferred the older, bolder looking one. also you pay more for the Beemer.

Beemers aren't much better,

Every 5 Series has a standard fit dual zone digital climate control system, a colour instrument cluster screen, leather, etc. Does the Audi?

the big 10" one look pretty amazing though, but then the Audi Googlemaps one looks the biz as well.

It would do had they not attempted to cram it all into a small screen not much bigger than the rubbish base one in the 5 Series :p

There are sufficient 5's with the proper nav fitted that you can discount cars without the crap one though. The 10.2" display is stunning and really makes the interior.

also you pay more for the Beemer.

You do, which is frustrating, but given they cost the same new this can only be because the market obviously sees the BMW as being the superior car, hence the relative values.

I tried so hard to like the A6 - despite being a BMW fan only an imbecile buys a car because of the badge without ensuring it's better than the competition, but I'm afraid it was just a disappointing car, at least at the £20k end of the market. I've no doubt the BiTDI version or whatever is quite nice. The other hugely annoying thing about the current A6 range is that you need to pretty much buy the top end model just to get a good gearbox. It's bizarre - BMW supply the wonderful ZF 8 speed throughout the entire range, Audi only offer it on the BiTurbo TDI. The lesser models have a choice between a DSG that system that feels more suited to a hot hatch than a wafty barge or a dreadful CVT. What are they playing at?

If its anything like the A4 the climate control knob when turned brings up a graphic on the main display, I must say ive always liked the A4/6 displays, but the BMW just takes it on to another level. How much is it as an option on the 5 series? The A4 SE Technik gets the 'high res' screen as std, but the google maps stuff is an expensive option.

It is simply different options and standard equipment. In one you get this as standard, in the other you get that...given that the BMW is more expensive new, I would expect a higher base spec. (Was satnav not an option on the base 2010 models?) And the base screen on the BMW is just unforgivably bad, the one in the A6 is better, again its a subjective opinion. As far as residuals, according to car-buyer, the Audi has better residuals and I could get a similar priced 5 series, but it looked naff without those options you advised me to get and with them it was more expensive than the S-line I ended up buying. I thought the S-Line was the better looking, better quality interior and better value car overall.

I admit though the deciding factor that made me choose the A6 was ultimately the dealer service, Ridgeway in Salisbury and Dick Lovett in Swindon were both dreadful, one couldn't even be bothered to let me test drive a car unless I made an appointment later in the week. Poole Audi on the other hand let me test drive pretty much anything there and then.

I had a choice of buying a 520 or the A6, for me the A6 was the nicer car. That is the real difference, personal choice and what you want from a car.
