Work / Play balance

That's your champagne socialist guilt kicking in, it'll soon stop if you stop reading the Morning Star every day. :p

I can lend you one of my copies of Atlas Shrugged to help, if you like? ;)
:D

<He's onto me>

I've felt like my jobs got easier as I've progressed up the greasy corporate ladder. :p

^Agreed, since having a child family time has pushed play time well out of the way, although there are times when the two overlap (in general for 'play time' think 'me time'). I used to a have a fairly reasonable balance, getting at least 10hrs a week of a me time (typically late evenings after my wife goes to bed).

Nowadays a days holiday usually means looking after my son rather than say playing games all day. I don't begrudge my family but I do miss having time to myself.

My work/home balance is pretty good but work/play isn't great, often a week goes past without getting time to play any games at all.

I work 9-5 but as my office is only 5 mins away. I leave the house at 8.45 get home at 5.10 and I very occasionally half to work an extra half hour but that's it. To be honest I'm bored some evenings and that is even after I get in from the gym at 7.00.

I work 9-5:30 and go to the gym 5 days a week so on weekdays I only get a couple of hours chillout time in the evenings before bed

If you have time to read anything by that idiot Rand then you have bigger issues than your work/play balance.

It wasn't an entirely serious offer. ;)

Besides, it was a rite of passage in freshman year to read Ayn Rand and extol the virtues of personal responsibility and ludicrously liberal economics whilst wearing a 'Who is John Galt?' T-shirt. Kind of like listening to Phish and Jimmy Buffet.

You know, until you realise it's all crap.

I beg to disagree on one point, whilst Jimmy Buffett has some offensively terrible albums (Christmas Island and Fruit Cakes I am looking at you) he also has some complete corkers.

The rest you can have.:p

I would say mines in a 60/40 at the moment.

The last bank holiday we had was the first one in a year and a half where I wasn't working, and did pretty much all weekends in May.

Usual 9 - 6 Job and being sent to Zurich next week on business to cover Support which I have to be up at 2/3am to get to heathrow :(

Ah, the first plane to Zurich... I remember it well from the late 90s. Trying to get to sleep at 2100 to get up at 0230. I don't miss it.

I hate my job, my life is dominated by my job, I go home tired and depressed, want to sleep, sleep, get up to go back to doing my job.

Play? What play? I haven't been "out" with a bunch of friends since January, I probably only play videogames for an hour a week and sometimes I don't at all, and I don't have the motivation to press on with my hobbies right now.

Wooooo

To top it all off, I'm on minimum wage, too socially anxious to communicate with my colleagues properly, and I only have this position until next January, after which I will be job hunting again.

Nobody likes Jimmy Buffett except for frat boys and alcoholic chicks from the south! :p

However, if that is an offer, I would like to take you up on it.

you're buying

Song title going on the back of my business cards when I return to work

(I will post some to myself via internal mail and pretend I have a bevvy of secret beauties, it'll be so rad you won't even be able to detect the tragedy).

:D

Standard hours are 9am-6pm. I try to keep it to that but long hours are the norm towards the end of projects (late nights, weekends). Unfortunately there's been a lot of project deadlines so far this year. The work is interesting and satisfying but I sometimes wish there was a bit more balance.

Still, my hours look very relaxed compared to my partner. She's a barrister and she's got a big case on at the moment. 18 hour days have become standard and I've barely seen her for more than 30 seconds this week. Thankfully she does get paid by the hour!

I try and keep a good balance of work and play. Ovetime is very rarely turned down as I like the extra money. Plus being on-call for one week in every month means you can spend nights in the office or have a quiet week.

I still do all my social activities and see mates. At the moment I am probably working more than I should.

we should all strive for a better work/life balance. money is no good if you have no time to enjoy it
we don't all have the choice unfortunately when faceless greedy employers get in the way
make the most of it and hold onto it if you have it!

I work as little as I can if I'm being honest, I hate my job.

Tend to work early in the morning, finish early, enjoy the afternoon and the evening, don't ever work over my hours unless I'm well compensated for it. I fully plan to retire at 50 - not interested in buying a second home or a big flashy car or any of that - I can live frugally - 50 and I'm out.

The government can eat a meaty one trying to rob me of my life making me work til I'm practically dead.
