Actor and long-time friend Adrian Edmondson said of Rik Mayall: "There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing. They were some of the most carefree stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him.

"And now he's died for real. Without me. Selfish ********."

Must be hard for him as they weren't exactly the best of mates the last couple of years :(

New Statesman was my fav of his work.

:(

Rik knew how to buckle his swash like few others.

Feeling emotional about all the giggles I had from his work when I was a kid.

Absolutely gutted :( and only last year there was talk of bringing bottom back but ade pulled the plug on the project.
Bet he wished he hadn't now :-/

Rip rik

Certainly shocking, and very sad news.

Bottom was one of my favourite programs as a kid, and also the source of my school nickname, which I carry to this day (no hair + dodgy specs).

I remember watching the Bottom live shows for the first time at a mates house and being in utter stitches. The prison scenes in Bottom Live 2 are still some of the funniest comedy scenes I've ever seen.

Might have to have a Bottom/Young Ones marathon at the weekend I think.

RIP Rik, and thanks.

Sad to hear this, feel like I grew up with some form of Riks comedic genius around me at some point throughout my life. RIP.

So sad, grew up watching Bottom with my Dad and he'd always get told off for letting me watch it :D Why couldn't Piers Morgan or someone else equally unsavoury go instead?

And i thought this Monday wasn't that bad how to put a downer on it!

"HEAVY MAN"

This house will become a shrine, and punks and skins and rastas will all gather round and hold their hands in sorrow for their fallen leader. And all the grown-ups will say, "But why are the kids crying?" And the kids will say, "Haven't you heard? Rick is dead! The People's Poet is dead!"

And then one particularly sensitive and articulate teenager will say, "Other kids, do you understand nothing? How can Rick be dead when we still have his poems?"

RIP Rik thanks for the laughs i've only just this week got the young ones dvd's i'll be watching them with a heavy heart :(

Love this thread! The Young Ones and later Bottom were hugely important in my youth. Like most people here I knew many episodes word for word.
It's pretty much where my entire sense of humour comes from.

Was trying to think which episode the "people's poet" scene a few posts above was from. I've got the Young Ones on now.

Great actor, huge loss to British comedy but great to see just how many people he was truly important to and who appreciated him every bit as much as I did.

RIP The Peoples Poet

Nice. This man has given me countless hours of joy with his shows. Probably watched most of what he's done and many times over. Remember having gaming sessions at a friends and right next to the monitor would be a tv playing bottom over and over. Ah great days.
