And yeah, I do miss the colours but mantle makes the game smoother with less FPS drops for me.

Any chance you could run the program i linked you using your settings and then everything on low except mesh using mantle? I'm interested in performance hit.

Yup will do that later on :)

ATM I am now considering returning the 290 though and going for the 780 :o I really like the 290 but it does run hot, (hitting 86 degrees and will only get hotter over the next few months) and I have yet to connect my second monitor so temps will increase further by about 5-10 degrees. Just having a look around and even if I get a cooler running CPU and add 2x120mm fans at the top of my case, I think the 290 will still run pretty hot.......

I just wish the 780 had 4GB VRAM and came with 3 games or was a bit cheaper.

As a result of the heat, I also think the GPU is throttling.

Are you positive you need more than 3GB? If so it's going to cost a far bit:

ATM no but for future games, possibly.....

Watch dogs and wolfenstein seem to hog a lot of VRAM but then they are poorly optimised............

If I am getting a 780, it will be the MSI gaming 3GB one @£350

What exactly is Mesh Quality?

edit: better just linking this :p

That's the one I have :) It's good but I have a full EK waterblock on it :D You may want to look at other cards as AFAIK there are better heatsinks out there these days.

oh nice! :D How does it cope with the latest games? (you got a high res. monitor don't you?)

Don't want to go any higher than £350 so MSI 780 my only choice. I really like the MSI coolers and brand in general.

I reinstalled War Thunder the weekend and having a blast. For a free game, its massive, and now they have ground armour as well. So on maps you can now have Tank Warfare and Air warfare during conquest. So much to unlock, really really enjoying it.

a good tutorial vid here if anyone is interested in giving it a go..it is free after all.

Nex, dont get a 3gb card, you'll be shooting yourself in the foot in the long run. If you not happy with the temps on that 290, send it back and wait it out for 6 months. 6GB 780s will drop in prce once the 880 arrives, and who knows, if the 880 come in at under £600 with 6gb on card, and a 512bit bus, then thats a definite purchase. You'll have way more options and possibilty a better buyers market than what you have now.

Have you set up a custom fan profile to keep the temperatures low?

AMD cards always run hot, I think you are being paranoid. If I were you I'd be keeping the card you have now bought and investing money in a decent case/cooling solution as what you have is gash.

Frame rates > Eye candy. Most competitive players play with a mixture of High, Low settings to get buttery smooth Gameplay.

personal preference really.... but why not have both xD 1080p, ultra preset, sweet fx, pretty much always 100+FPS for my 120Hz monitor :D only time it really dips is if I'm standing right on the leveloution..... then it hit's like a *****!!!! but that's more the games fault and not setting changes will help that ( both myself on max and my mate on low had god awful FPS drop when standing in close prox to **** collapsing, damn, hotel, etc... but a bit further away and no probs really)

Nope, running 1920x1080 120Hz monitor. Stats above should give you a good idea regarding how it runs. Would be interesting if you could run the same bench on the same settings so we could compare.

Perhaps Tony....

Can't wait 6 months though unless I want to have a huge back log of games :p

Tried that but then the noise is an issue.

Only this gen of AMD cards have been bad, my 7850 was very cool and quiet, didn't go past 35 at idle and didn't go past 70 at load.

I have reconnected my second monitor and now the 290 is 52 degrees at idle...... so no doubt this will be hitting 90 when gaming.

Not buying another case! :p Only just got this antec p100!!! I can add another 2x120mm fans at the top and with a i5 4670k, temps should be a bit lower overall, however, I don't think it will be enough as looking at reviews, it just seems like the 290 gets hot regardless of cooling setup and as a result throttles reducing performance.

that res. on a 27" monitor? Not find it lacking sharpness etc. a bit?

Will also do the test on zavod too since some maps are more demanding. What server did you play on, 48 or 64 man player?

I used to play on a 30" DELL and I do miss the pixel density, hence why I'm hanging out for the new Asus monitor, it will have the best of both worlds.

Was playing on 48 I think doing a mix of tanking and run and gun (one of the reasons why I like Zavod).
