Do you understand this art

But I very much doubt they'd lose money on it. It's an investment, whether or not they think it's good.

Going by the its doubled its value in 6 years of recession it must be a good investment. I'd have to independently like the product though. You'd be gutted if the artist went down in value over time and didn't become a timeless one like Van Gogh.

Art is basically just what other people deem to be popular, even if it (in the cases above) is complete and utter tripe.

Picture it like flappy bird; hardly a masterpiece of development in any way, but it got popular, so was worth a lot of money. Most art is the same principal.

I don't understand why the painting is hung upside down.

Damn, you're right, can't believe no-one else spotted this!

I've rotated the pic and re-uploaded it so everyone can enjoy it as the artist intended:

It's given value by the artistic community. It's in their favour as thats how they all make a living. People that buy this stuff don't like it. They just want it to go up in value. An artist dieing is just one way this happens.

I don't think there's anything to "get". If you like it you like it, if you don't then that's fine too. There's no right or wrong with art - it's whatever makes you feel like you like it.

Personally it's not my cup of tea, and I wouldn't spend my money on it, but I can understand why some people get excited about things like this - I never thought much about the Mona Lisa until I saw it in person, and it really is quite remarkable considering when it was painted, but also it becomes cherished and a "classic" as a result.
