Google I/O 2014 - 25/26 June

360 looks nice. Really starting to notice that black bar at the bottom though. Could possibly be a deal breaker for me.
MKBHD has the two colours side by side. I'm a fan of black but that grey looks nice.

SNIP

Its either a bar at the bottom or a bezel around the whole display, I would rather take the bar tbh xD, just need more UI that focuses on black, since this is also OLED display I believe.

So Motorola wouldn't confirm that it's wireless charging, but it has no external ports...

Pretty much confirms its wireless charging then?

The more I look at the 360 compared to the LG and Samsung phones, the more I see something they will expect to charge £300+ for. At that price it just ain't happening.

Does look expensive, but it will be marketed as the premium wearable. I'm only interested if they release the metal bracelet version, I would pay around £500 for that.

£500! I'd certianly not pay that for it.

If it came in around the prices of the others, I'd be seriously tempted and I was not long ago ****ging these 'smart watches' off. It really is nice.

So I have spent the day using Android L, and outside of a spaz out where it restarted a few times in a row its actually be better stable. I don't have titanium backup so I'm missing most of my games, what I have seen so far.

  • The design as a whole is really nice, there are a few missing things e.g. no way to clear all notifications, notifcation shade is a bit buggy when your landscape, pop ups with white backgrouns don't work so well e.g. facbeook comments. As a whole thou I really like the direction
  • Notifcations are really nice. From the little things, I love the new volume layout, you get a button on the left to quickly switch between modes, and one on the right to select your do not disturb settings. I thought I would hate lockscreen notifcations but I like it. I like the lockscreen as a whole, its really nice, from the way it bounces around playfully, swiping up to unlock is also great.
  • The new apps e.g contacts show a level of polish I have yet too see from Google. Its beautiful and literally makes everything else on the market look bad, from the horrible new phone call UI on iOS, to the better WP8.1 version. The dailer as a whole is very playful, animations are spot on, and the phone call UI is beautiful
  • I sort of like the quick settings, it makes sense to pull the notifcation shade down futher, and it finally works properly e.g. click to toggle on all settings, won't believe how joy i felt when I clicked the WiFi icon and it worked.

So far I'm really enjoying it.

I put L on my N5 last night, been using it all day and generally liking it, be better when more apps follow the new design guidelines over time.

The multitasking bit is far nicer imo, notifications (and lock screen notifcations)/quick settings works really well, also the updated battery page with an estimated 'time left' is nice.

One thing I'm struggling to get used to is unlocking oddly, previously I always swiped my thumb to the right, now that opens the dialer rather than just unlocking, kinda minor but I just keep doing it and it may start to irritate me soon :p

So it looks like photography is a key focus in the new camera 2 app. The new pipeline allows L to interface directly with the camera hardware so the app is now only as fast as the camera on your phone, which for most phones is now going to be amazing. You also get RAW support among all other manual controls:

One of the most important aspects of the new Camera 2 API is a dramatic increase in performance over the previous interface. The Camera 2 system is now capable of delivering full resolution images at the same speed the hardware can capture them thanks to a fully synchronized pipeline model. This allows the Nexus 5 to achieve 30 frames per second while capturing 8 at it's maximum of 8 megapixels.

In addition to the profound performance improvements, the new camera API also includes burst mode, Digital Negative format (similar to RAW), HDR+, and full manual control of capture and post-processing. Many of the finer control configurations can also be modified, including:

Exposure time
ISO Sensitivity
Frame duration
Lens focus distance
Flash trigger
Color correction matrix
JPEG metadata
Tonemap curve
Crop region
AE / AF / AWB mode
AE / AWB lock
AF trigger
Precapture AE trigger
Metering regions
Exposure compensation
Target FPS range
Capture intent
Video stabilization

This is amazing news.

and he deserves every bit of it. Although he did say he still buy's a lot of the devices himself.

I have to say...while L looks fantastic, my worry is that when it comes to the OEM's bringing out their own versions such HTC Sense we'll lose a lot of the look of the new design. However I suppose that's when converting to Google Phone Edition comes into play :p
