Enough gaming grunt to power a 1440p monitor

Morning guys,

Is there a definitive card that is best suited to gaming at 1440p 60fps?

I understand it will depend on the game being played but would a normal 780 cope at the higher resolution for most games or would a 6gb 780 or 780ti be needed

Any shared wisdom would be fantastic!

Considering a NZXT 440 case for a new build, with the temp issues reported I've been leaning more towards a single card setup purely to keep the airflow easier

Do you know if there are any comparisons between the 780 3GB and 6GB versions for 1440p? No idea if the extra memory will be useful or if 3GB will always be enough

Nobody knows really if 3GB will always be enough but there's no harm getting more memory if you can find a good deal.

As above a single 780 / 290 will be able to handle the majority of games at 1440. If you want all the bells and whistles in ALL games you're going to need 2 cards ideally.

Try one though. I thought I'd need another 780 for 1449 eventually but I'm still going with one and no game I play at 1440 really struggles at all.

Cheers for the advise guys, I'll try and find a deal on a 6GB 780 but might opt for the standard version if the price is noticeably different

This may seem like a silly question but will everything the computer displays be at 1440p? i.e. will office applications and normal web browsing look a little better or is it purely for gaming that the higher definition is useful (try not to judge me if the answer is obvious! :p)

I use a 1440p display with a 780gtx, it's also my work pc -office/admin/marketing bits..etc so a fair few software packages - everything runs great, looks crisp, not encountered any problems

Windows will be 2560x1440 too so everything will scale to the new resolution.

You could flick the resolution to whatever suits.

1440/1080p.

Get a rotated case, like the Silverstone FT02 for the improved airflow (heat rises) and cards with blower fans. Also, make sure that the x16 slots are 3 slots apart i.e. nos 1, 4, and 7 or nos 2, 5, and 8 to ensure the cards don't interfere with each other.

The style of the 440 has already won me over I'm afraid :p appreciate the recommendation though, the FT02 seems like a quality case

Great to know that the new resolution will be used for everything, getting all excited for a new graphics card/monitor :D

The 6GB 780 is not necessary at 1440p, I'd only get one of them over a 3GB if the price difference is negligible (relatively). My 780s handle everything fine at 1440p with all settings at maximum except for AA, which is very much game-dependent on which setting I end up using. Even Crysis 3 maxed out at 1440p does not use all 3GB VRAM, the only game which hits this barrier is Watch_Dogs but we all know about that title and it's 'incredible' memory management...

A single 3GB 780 handles most games very well at 1440p with most settings at ultra.

Ah it's awesome news that a 780/290 should be enough for 1440p, thought I might have had to shell out ~£500 on getting a 780ti

I know this is a highly opinionated debate but are there many advantages/disadvantages between a 780 or 290 for gaming at a higher resolution or are they pretty much the same?

They are much of a muchness really, you'll get similar performance with either and you'll more than likely be very happy with either. It just depends on which games you play the most and what features you are mostly into, the "All you need to know..." sticky at the top of this sub-forum is pretty useful for that information.

But, either way, you'll be happy with a 780 or 290 :)

Its a valid question. An example would be @1080p and 27" my old monitor fit 9 desktop icons top to bottom and my 1400p 27" has 14. Everything looks a lot smaller and crisper
