I'm planning to order some parts from the US and taiwan as more choices are available from them. Anyone knows how much the tax I need to pay for goods worth $600?

fortunately only 20% vat is applicable for the watercooling bits I'm ordering but still quite a lot if I was to order $500 worth of goods... It's really annoying that there's not much variation of components in the UK compared to the US if there was then most of the time it is out of stock...

Plenty of reputable "firms" do just this.

As a proportion of the total number of firms that ship internationally, only a small fraction will. Why would they bother, the potential hassle when it all goes wrong and somebody loses the package is too big - insurance is to protect the firm as much as it is you. They have a responsibility to get it to you and they are putting that in danger if they falsely declare the value so you can commit duty fraud :p

Plus I'd imagine customs see right through it anyway.

I understand how it all works, I'm just saying that plenty of reputable companies do just this. I have probably had over 100 things shipped to me internationally, and I have only had 3 items get charged customs fees, and even then I only paid one of them because I wasn't willing to pay the handling fees of 2 of the parcels, I just took them and left with giving them nothing. I told them I was only willing to reimburse them for the VAT they paid on my behalf, and they said "it's all or nothing" so I chose nothing and took my stuff, twice from the same depot. :p

Are you requesting that the companies declare your items at lower than their true cost?

People do know that just writing "value $5" on a package doesn't mean it magically flies through customs don't they?
You don't think HM Customs might just be a little bit wise to packages attempting to evade taxes?
I'll attempt to dig out the link - however I remember reading an interview with customs workers who said that quite often special attention is given to "low value declared packages" because this is exactly what people are trying to get away with.

It depends on the items, I've had all sorts come through with low values though, and as I said out of 100+ shipments, only 3 have actually been stopped.

If I am going to request a price though, I'll put it just below the limit.

You know this is tax evasion right?
