Honeymoon – Virgin Flight (upgrade) ?

Just booked the honeymoon, after few months shopping around we settled on Mexico.

Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun

To the question: we are flying out with Virgin, is it worth even looking at Premium Economy or Upper Class?

Has anyone flown in either class, it’s an extra £350 - £500 each one way per person to step-up to premium economy.

Not something I have ever considered before, but it’s our honeymoon (I only plan on doing this once) :o

I have also checked (worth a shot) the official line on free upgrades is they don't give them unless economy is oversold and even the gold/silver card holders get preference.


Alternative option is to see if I can buy someone air miles from someone - that does not need them or plan to use before expiry (not even sure if this is an option ? )

PE upgrade is worth it imho - I can't sleep in E but manage a few hours in PE on long haul. UC - don't know, I've travelled business if that compares, but in terms of what you get vs what you pay then I would punt for PE.

I traveled to the Riviera Maya with Thompson last year, went for the regular carriage. It was pretty decent & I was happy enough not to have upgraded.

Having said that, as it's your honeymoon why not?
 
Depends on the flight.

We got upgraded from PE to First class once but it was flying to Florida so it was day time the whole way. Would've rather had First class flying back in the night time.

For an 8+ hour flight I would say PE is definitely worth it.
 
What he meant (I think) was that if ever there was a way of spending extra money he would put it on the hotel or a better destination rather than worrying about upgrading the flight.

I would do this too personally,, go for a ridiculous meal, hire a helicopter, do something crazy fun with the £1k instead of just being a bit more comfy for a few hours.
 
Premium economy isn't worth it (IMO). Flew it on the way to Vegas. There's barely any extra leg room. The LCD screens are slightly bigger, the drinks come round more often and you have toilets reserved only for people in PE. They are the only benefits.

If Virgin were rubbish in economy I'd say it would be worth it but their economy experience is pretty damn good so I wouldn't bother.

First class however, is a different kettle of fish.

Edit - It was to LA actually, we drove to Vegas from there.
 
Depends how tall you are. I'm 6'4 so I struggle in economy unless it's a short flight or an older plane (where seat pitch is normally more generous).

Air miles might not get you what you want. Usually there's a limited number of seats unless you've also got lots of tier points.

This is what I'd do, spend it on something you'll really remember rather than just so you can think oh yeah that flight was a little more comfortable.

Don't bother with airmiles. For the amount you'd need for the UGs it'll cost you almost as much as acquire them as it would for your UG. Might be able to find someone willing to sell you some they don't intend to use but given you get 3 years and can easily acquire airmiles through schemes/offers they have to keep the 3 months rolling I doubt you'd have any luck.

I'm off to Florida next June and we've gone economy there, UC return. Having the bed and UC service for the return flight is really important if you want to have a enjoyable red-eye flight. Flew back December 2012 in economy and it was not enjoyable. We did the UGs using airmiles though, which makes it a bit cheaper.
 
One thing to bear in mind is your fellow passengers, I can't comment on Business or First class but my sister upgraded to PE on her honeymoon flight and said she was surrounded by sub-human scum, basically old OAPs who kept on farting and constantly making demands on the cabin crew as they were entitled to it all having paid a bit extra - you know the sort. I flew PE once and can confirm that although not as bad as my sister's experience, my fellow PE passengers were annoying retards - much more annoying than people in cattle class.

If you can't afford Upper Class then I'd advise going Economy and booking favourable seats (if possible) - unless you're tall and need the leg room I guess.
