I've seen this happen so many times, does the car in the left lane (red) have to go left or does the car in the right lane (green) have to go straight on ?

Green car is definitely in the wrong.

Red car is only wrong if there is road markings indicating it is left only. Usually left lane is fine for straight on

Generally speaking the green line/car should be where the red /line car is and vice versa.

But the amount of muppets i encounter that have zero to very little lane discipline is outstanding!!

Based on your angle of approach, if its before the 12 o'clock positions, you should be using the left hand lane. After the 12 position should be the right hand lane, or middle if indicated.

Actually, neither should be driving as they're clearly intoxicated ;)

One of my biggest bugbears when inept idiots dont know which lane to use on a roundabout. Last night i had some idiot almost take me out as i was about to take the second lane, he came blasting round the outer lane of the roundabout and nearly took me and another car out in the process. Thank god both of us were paying attention and slowed right down as he went past our fronts.

To be honest, they're both doing better than the majority of idiots around here - at least in your drawing they're staying in the same lane...

Surely the green one would have been killed when it went through the light trail of the red lightcycle?

There is a roundabout in 'boro where both lanes can turn left. So traffic joining and wanting to go straight on can potentially get caught up with two lanes wanting to go left.

It's stupid how a lot of roundabouts have inconsistent markings. I've been cut up loads on ones where the left lane is left turn only and right lane is straight on. You get people in the left lane who cut across the front of you to go straight on.

Road markings have some bearing too of course, as well as the usual accepted layout. I find peoples lack of lane discipline annoying at the best of times but add a non standard layout and it all goes a bit mental. The large roundabouts with lane markings all over the place on the roundabout itself can become a free for all!

hehe :D

but to echo illustrations, generally left lane is for left turns and straight on and then the right lane is for going further round the round about than straight on. or at least my understanding of it.

but of course this is all subject to local road layout and road markings.

If there is a dual carriageway on opposite sides of the roundabout, you can go straight over in either lane, joining the corresponding lane on the other side as well.

Yup, that's what I was always taught - unless otherwise indicated, left lane for left/straight on, right lane for straight on/right.

What gets me though is that a lot of roundabouts are marked for left lane for turning left only and they want you in the right lane for straight on or right. Because the councils keep marking roundabouts up differently to how the highway code says that they should work, it's no wonder people can't get their heads around them when there's no specific markings.
