Poll: *Poll* Buy new FX CPU release

If AMD release a new Steamroller CPU that's 10% faster, 20% more power efficient but £20 more expens

I own an Intel CPU and probably would buy a Steamroller based FX chip.

Bored of the 4670K... :D

Give them 5 or 6 years and they might release something which is better than the 4670K :p

Also I'm not sure how you can get "bored" of a CPU.

Especially when you haven't had it 5 minutes. :p

They are just too far behind unfortunately
I have never owned a amd cpu but would love too
I also tend to keep my mobo cpu for a long time

It's not good for competition for amd to not be in the high end but Tbh I don't blame them.
Its so expensive to r and d and if you pour all that in and come out with nothing good.. It's not good

They are probably better focusing on console designs, apus etc. The big clocking cpus in the consumer segment must be tiny

#I own an Intel CPU and would NOT buy this new AMD Steamroller CPU

And that because I used to own a T1090 and an FX8350.
Seriously, AMD needs to get more power per core than a "10% overall".

Until they do so, and put a product on the market that an AMD core can beat an Intel core from my i7 4820K, I will stick with what I have, and any change will be a downgrade.

And I do not care if the that CPU going to be 4 core or 8 core.

Don't really feel the need to upgrade yet, so i think the 8320 will keep me going for a while. Would be nice to see AMD come back though.

EDIT: I think the FX have a lot of potential, they're just a bit ahead of their time.

Would your cpu not bottleneck your tri fire graphics cards?

I would have got one of those top end Piledrivers, but not after reading the reviews yesterday:-

it has a very slow graphics processing/number crunching power for gaming, compared to the Intel .....enough said:(
in fact, it's no better than mine :eek: and mine is what 4 years old !!!!

AMD havent closed the performance gap over the last 4 years, it's about the same.

AMD dont have a great range of MOBOS either....they're all about 70 quid with about 3 just over a £100..... this tells you that nobody is serious about using the AMD for gaming..

on the review i read that the Intel was about 42% faster in terms of its graphics processing power....so this 10% they quote is still way behind

finally, a Steamroller is God damned slow, so this name fits quite well

Even with 10% performance bump it would still be slower than my current CPU. If AMD managed a consistent i7-beating CPU I'd be all over it.

i dont know why this performance gap still exists

Keep an eye on the Opterons, as any new tech will go into those first.

For example the latest Opteron 6300 series CPU offers up to 16 cores at 2.5GHz with a huge lump of cache and a TDP of 99W. There are other, similar CPU's offering up to 16 cores at 3.5GHz with a TDP of 140W which have been available for a couple of years.

the 1st thing i was suspicious of yesterday is that you cant get a really good mobo for it, it's a very poor range compared to Intel, then all you do is read its review

Would need to be something special , as mentioned your in i5 price range and the difference is still too much between them.

Will add ,, had loads of AMD processors ,, loved the Athlon and x2 dual range. But from Q6600 on-wards there's been no comparison.

I don't know, the Phenom II put up a pretty good fight against the Core 2 Quads in the same price bracket.

It was when Intel released the 'i' series CPU's that the gap started to widen.

I own an FX-8350 and to be perfectly honest I'm more than happy with it's performance. I don't see much point in upgrading until it starts to struggle, and only when I get to that point will I look into buying a replacement.

Happy enough with my 8 core 8350 @ 4.5GHz on air at the moment :). It would even boot into windows at over 5GHz on air, wouldn't want to run benches though.

I agree Intel has the edge but most CPU, motherboard and memory combos last 5 years anyway, do you really notice if you have 120fps or 90? Even a Q6600 with 8GB Ram and a decent card will still run 95% of stuff fine.

I own an Intel CPU and would NOT buy this new AMD Steamroller CPU

But only because I've only had my 4790K for week, and I'm more than happy with the performance of it and would likely be keeping it at the very least until the warranty ends. :p But I agree with others here, I really hope AMD step up their game a bit for Steamroller, I don't mind if it sticks to DDR3 but I think it needs a farily large IPC improvement to keep up with Intel in the single threaded apps, and preferably a lower TDP to go with it (maybe closer to ~100w and I'd be happy).

We've already seen around an 11% improvement per clock from Richland to Kaveri, and around a 20% improvement in multithreaded performance. I would expect an FX Excavator to approach parity with Haswell in multithreaded applications at least.

Caveat being if such a CPU is actually released!

It could be, there was rumour of a Jim Keller rework dropping the Modular design in favour of Intel stile Hyper Threading for 2016. thats too long to wait. for Q4 2014 / Q1 2015 i would like to see the steamroller improvements brought to the FX line.

PS: Jim Keller is the Athlon XP architect, and Apples A Series.

There is ZERO chance of a Steamroller or Excavator big core FX. I repeat; ZERO.

FX replacement comes in 2016, as part of the new K12 architecture. We know this because this is what AMD told us.

Thread is pointless.

I would like to buy a AMD CPU but atm they are just to power hungry, I do like how they keep the sockets for a long time but my i5 I have had it 2 years and it will be good for another 3-5 years for me. Think the first thing AMD needs is to lower the amount of power they use or make something like the i7 for i5 money, without using overclocking headroom.
