The VW Corrado VR6 is the best VW ever made.

I have a few which I like for different reasons...

Bora V6 4MOTION - Just love the style of the Bora, and the V6 is the nicest engine. Also quite like the V5 170HP
Golf III VR6 Highline - Again, quite like the style, and the noise of that VR6, also very popular/easy to modify
Polo 9N GT PD130 - One hell of a sleeper, can be re-mapped to 180HP with no physical modifications and just looks like a Polo TDI. :D
EOS V6 FSI - It is a manageable size, lovely engine, DSG and lots of toys as standard, don't see many about
Polo MK.I Coupé - The retro king in my eyes, big fan of these, would prefer over a Golf MK.I. :)

Have you driven any of these?

I'll just about give you the v6 4mo, nice cars if a little disappointing power wise.

V5 just disappointing all round

VR6, I had one (two actually, but only one a mk3) and loved it at the time, but lets be realistic - they sound great but never really had the grunt to match. The previous owner to me had spent a significant sum of money on cams, a manifold back exhaust sytem and remapping the car. It made about 15-20bhp (if even) of a difference. Hardly what I'd call easy to modify. Bit like modern n/a Hondas where owners will convince themselves its ok to spend thousands of pounds eeking out about a 10% bhp increase (if even, some of the claimed gains are hilarious) - not for me.

Polo diesel, really? Yes it gives a nice bit of shove for a small car for a few seconds, but the Fabia VRS (ignoring associated scene tax) always felt like a better product to give some sort of pretense at "sporty". Actually the 130bhp ibiza was a better drive too.

EOS - You realise how much these leak? They are also far from entertaining to drive

They are awful, bit like the peugeot CC offerings. My ex has an eos and thinks it's amazing so amazing in fact she is on her second, the first was a petrol and the second is a diesel. I've been in the diesel one...they don't seem that good a car at all.

Sorry, but your wrong

Mk1 Golf gti is the winner here (yes I'm biased ;))

I do like them but most of the ones I see are cabrios (which I'm not really a fan of) and if they aren't then they are usually quite tatty/barried up which is a huge shame as clean and standard they look great. Never driven one though.

As acme says though, photos!

Is that a diesel Polo featured in a list of best Volkswagen ever and described as 'one hell of a sleeper'?

Amazing.

:D

The steering feels unresponsive and rubbery, the gearchange is worse, the pedal position is uncomfortable and the brakes feel like they are connected to the the pedal via a series of ropes and pulleys.

I found the Mk1 GTI disappointing overall.

I want another Bora.... with its rocket fast turbo tractor engine to pull me along at warp speed.......................

In all seriousness though, I want another Bora :(

Polo G40 would be my (slightly tongue in cheek) vote.

- Decent performance.
- Classic understated looks.
- Rarity.

Plus I just wanted one... always considered they'd be a bit of a 'sleeper'.

Only driven a remapped PD130 Polo out of that list and it pulled like a train. :p Had a lot of fun.

Yes I do consider a 180HP Polo with TDI badges to be a sleeper. It looks like a 1.4 75HP TDI bar the wheels and is noticeably quicker than a Polo 9N3 GTI.

Haven't driven the rest, only watched videos of, bar the Eos which I've only looked at.

I can only propose you go get a run in some quick cars ( I say quick....I mean over say 230-250bhp and reasonably light )

A remapped pd 130 will have a nice amount of shove....to suggest anything more is a bit....ambitious

Also - why would you compare a modified car to a standard one? With the same power and weight the petrol car would be a much better drive....but still far from one of the best you'll ever experience

No they don't have the grunt to match the sound but I wouldn't say there were lacking in grunt.

I want to get one again but most of my day to day driving would be the worst possible scenario for one - highlighting the poor fuel economy and lack of agility for around town driving :S

Don't get me wrong, I'd quite happily own one (or any vr engined car) again if I just wanted a cheap runabout - It's just they never quite lived up to being the Halo model people would have liked

The PD130 will return 60mpg post remap and leave GTI in the dust. Thats why I like them. :p

Will test drive other cars in due course. I drove a turbo'd GT86 in a car park if that counts? Lol

No 192bhp is not much nowadays. But it was respectable 22 years ago in 1992 when launched. No the mk1 GTI handling isn't very good nowadays but 38 years ago in 1976 it blew away anything in the same market. You can't compare older classic cars to today's technology. They have to be taken in context to what else was available at the time.
