... as foreign secretary.

William Hague is to stand down as foreign secretary with immediate effect and will take on the lesser role of leader of the House of Commons as David Cameron embarked on the most far reaching reshuffle of the parliament that was dubbed a new "night of the long knives".

Hague will stand down as an MP at the next General Election, then will get on the charity gravy train. The other big casualty is Ken Clarke however this wasn't really news. Lots of other ministers you've never heard of are also out and consigned to the back benches.

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond is expected to replace Hague as Foreign Secretary, Dr Liam Fox is tipped to return, and lots of lady ministers will be appointed to be lovely and "connect with female voters" for the last year of parliament before they presumably will be replaced by white, middle-aged, millionaire men again.

I'm sad about this. I really like Hague and was hoping that he'd one day end up as leader of the Conservative party (once again) and maybe even be PM.

Zero chance he would ever win an election, just about any time I hear him in an interview where they push him he get's aggressive or just repeats himself over and over so he doesn't lose it. Always comes across as so smug, he would have no chance even against a dead goat like Milliband.

I thought that he just plodded along after resigning the leadership in 2001 just churning out the same monotonous lines.

I used to think he was quite good, until he turned into an arse as foreign secretary. The policies he was pursuing were horrendous, but then they were probably party politics.

once described by Peter Mandelson as 'one of the slipperiest characters he had ever met in politics'

William Hague is effectively being 'looked after' and moved to the inner circle of downing street to concentrate on the next election,

as a tory voter myself, I always found Hague smug and brash, but his role as foreign secretary fitting.

bring on the girls lol

My guess is he isn't seeking re-election in 2015 as he would be 59 by the time that term ended and he just want's to relax and enjoy his life now after burning the candle at both ends for so long.

He came up short against Blair but he could easily take Miliband, maybe even Brown.

I hate the way Hague leaving is being portrayed (in the media) as though he's been forced out. He's stepped down after a 40 odd year career and told the party last year. He's also stepping down from MP of Richmond as well. Agree with the above, he's one of the very few MP's I have any respect for these days and has been great as a local MP for a very long time.

After 26 years in Parliament it's time to catch up:

“From May 2015, after such a long period in politics I want to embark on many other things I have always wanted to do”

Well as least the tories have their token females in now, not as if they could have brought them in earlier when perhaps they could have made real change or had actual power?

I'm waiting on Labour scrambling to get some more women in the line up now.

HOLY SMOKE! Michael Gove has been demoted from Education Secretary to Chief Whip! That'll win a few votes lol.
