7970 replacement ?

Any current single gpu card won't produce more frames than your current set up.

If you're really after a single card to upgrade to. It'll really be at the next die shrink.

thanks for the very quick response guys .... very good point about the X version snips ... that saves a few hundred quid as I will be looking to put twin cards in my case however as like most I have OCD when it comes to the look of my setup so need to find a red based card to match my current case setup :-)

If you're after cards to match your colour scheme, you'd be looking at the MSI Gaming versions, but I'd personally look at the Tri-X as they have superb overclocking headroom in comparison to other 3rd patry coolers.

What monitor are you gaming on? Do you need 2 cards? A single 290 would go justice up to 1440p.

You can run an r9 290 Crossfire, you'd just see very little benefit.
Chimaloy did the same thing, he ran an R9 290X Crossfire and when I mentioned a bottleneck (Like you he flipped out, I've got a stellar memory, so I remember you) he eventually changed to an Intel set up and reported his gains.

That said, I'd personally just stick with what you've got now. Or switch to an Intel set up, then change your GPU's at the next die shrink.

Awesome setup you've got there mate, what CPU are you running by the way? I know it's AMD obviously, but wondered what model and what speed it's running at?

Isn't Hawaii XTX just a higher clocked part? (Makes sense because they've got some heavily diminishing returns with their shaders at the moment, evident by the R9 290/290X difference)

It might be GCN 2.0 (if rumours are true) like Tonga, so it could be worth waiting for to take advantage of power savings, cooler operation etc. Or it could just be the same card with higher clocks and faster memory...
