2014 Cabinet Reshuffle - William Hague gone

I thought Labour were committed to reversing his policy of free schools being able to use unqualified teachers?

So one minor policy (is it just free schools or Academies too?) but none of the major reforms to teaching. I believe Labour have also said they will change it so that AS levels count towards the A2 qualification too, not that it makes that much difference as most A2 students retake the AS exams anyway to improve their grade.

As someone who works in a school, with a wife who is a teacher, we couldn't be happier Gove is gone, the despicable little man. Good riddance.

He has destroyed the education system for a generation. As the program showed last night there are extremist Muslim, Jewish and Christian fundamentalist schools being allowed to flout the law with Gove's department blessing. The best description was the Balkanisation of the education system.

The unfunny thing is all this fuss over the Birmingham schools was it was the result of Gove's idea in the first place. Like all politicians he swiftly tried to shift the blame to the City Council, except, of course the whole idea was to take schools out of local authority control.

They do now, you get the AS for the first year and the A2 after the second year. An A2 is basically an A-level but the first year is it's own qualification (AS level). This split was done so drop outs walked away with something.

This is due to change, AS will still be AS but will no longer count towards A2.

He came up short against Blair but he could easily take Miliband, maybe even Brown.

I'm not so sure. The Tories were still toxic after he took power and Labour had a huge majority which even the most charismatic politician would have difficulty overturning.

Hague regularly wiped the floor with Blair at the despatch box. As a Commons orator, Hague has few equals.

Hague may have been disliked by many but he was one of the few members of parliament that actually had the brains and political nous to be a top level politician - he is very well regarded in the international political scene, just not figurehead/PM material.

Remains to be seen whether the same can be said about Hammond - by all accounts he seems to be more of an accountant than a seasoned political negotiator, but at least he won't be around long if he can't hack it.

Urgh.

This is a reoccurring theme for this government - ignore expert advice and then sack the person who gave it. This is going to get messy and expensive.

How can anyone complain about this?:

Because it wont work and will be open to legal challange?

The whole point of having a supernational court is so that national courts cant just rule against human rights. The UK Supreme Court already has the ability to refer cases back to the European Court of Human Rights if they disagree with the judgement.

again everything that is wrong with this country on show, promoting people based on whats between their legs rather than between their ears.

I don't care if your a man or a woman all I care about as a voter and a uk citizen is whether your the best person for the job.
