Hi all, me again :)

Just a quick question, I bought all the new self build items from this site the middle of June (post has disappeared already) but not thermal paste for the fan, is it really required? I think I read somewhere on her that it wasnt really needed other than between the motherboard and chip?

Gonna start building it today so hoping i dont need it :)

You put TIM on the top of a CPU that connects the the base of the fan. Nowhere else on the CPU and defo not the bit that connects to the MOBO. Ever.

I guess i got lucky as i got some free thermal paste with my ocuk order :D

I was gonna put some on the top of the CPU (thin spread) where it connects with the fan heatsink. Is that not right?

No you need to get a frying pan and lay the case on its side and then place the pan on top of your cpu. Next put some sunflower oil in the pan and go to the shop and buy some eggs. Once you get back from the shop you need to turn on your computer and break the eggs putting them in the pan and leave for 15 mins, While you wait butter some bread. Once the time and elapsed turn off the computer and place eggs in bread then eat.

The time can be adjusted and quicker by using an AMD FX CPU and putting a massive Overclock on it while running Intel burn test....

I got some fangtatics and and a ball hand training thing in with my order though. Although after checking Im missing my RAM too, which should have been free with my mobo, hence the reason i bought the one i did :p

So could be on hold anyway so can nip and get the thermal paste in the meantime, so just to confirm never ever on the cpu to mobo but definately on the cpu-fan?

If you read what I post that is exactly what I said to do, unsure if troll post or not

Fan
TIM
CPU
MOBO

Just like that bud, get some youtube videos as there are many different methods for applying it, pea, line, spread, dolop etc etc

In all honesty mate, I'd go away and do some research, as If you don't no what to do with TIM, I don't think you entirely ready to start building your rig yet mate. I don't mean to come across harsh, but when you are talking about putting it on fans you don't seem to have a clue, it goes between the heat sink base, and the top of the cpu, once it the cpu, is installed into the socket, it is basically there to dissipate the heat between 2 metal objects, there is a lot more to it than that, that is just the simplest way to explain it.

Please go and make your self a brew, and sit down with a good few YouTube vids , building a rig, there are loads of good ones out there, here's a good simple one mate, I can't post any more as the best ones are from competitors.

While I think you're sort of right - I don't think the mention of 'putting it on the fan' is as bad as you're thinking, as I believe he's using 'fan' to refer to the whole heat sink assembly, so he actually is talking about putting it between CPU and heat sink.

The idea that someone might put it on the CPU pins is far scarier!
