I have no earthly idea why he is considered funny, that also goes for about 95% or so called comedians. He has no real insight or intelligence, just blatantly not funny. So why is he on the TV, is society that grim?

Because different people have different tastes. Some people find Leigh Francis amusing, or enjoy listening to Fearne Cotton.

Some of his earlier stuff was quite funny, while I think its somewhat an act he acts like he so believes his own abilities these days that he can't believe he can do/say anything that isn't comedy genius and so most of his recent stuff is complete failure imo.

To give less of a copout answer, it depends. I enjoyed The Office and Extras, and his stand up was a lot better than a lot of the observational comedy that seems to be fawned over these days (Animals, Politics etc.). I also really rated Cemetery Junction as a film, although that wasn't a comedy.

A lot of the stuff he's done for Sky or since fame went to his head a bit and he went over to the US has been utterly terrible though.

The more famous he has got the less funny his material is.

Although watching Planet of the Apes yesterday did constantly remind me of 'Derek'...

Stand up = ****

In person = Funny

Acting = Brilliant in Derek

Ricky Gervais + Karl Pilkington = Brilliance

The Office is absolutely outstanding. I think it's one of the best shows ever made. I'm not convinced Extras is that great, but it's ok. I've not liked his other stuff much.

I have a feeling that he wasn't actually acting that much in The Office, or that at the very least being a total arse came very easily to him...

I'm not a fan of his stand up.
I'm not a fan of the Office or Extras. They're okay, but I never wanted to re-watch them.
I do like Derek. I had no idea he could act so well.

I am a fan of his XFM stuff (and subsequent podcasts, audio books, and TV show) with Steven Merchant and the epic Karl Pilkington. I've heard/seen them all, many times, and they never, ever get boring. I can't say I've ever experienced that anywhere else.

I find his laugh completely infectious, while others find it nauseating.
