hate selling cars!!

Some people can really test the patience of someone selling a car, I remember when I sold my last car I was getting phonecalls at 10pm at night asking if they could travel down to view the car from Manchester (well over an hour away) and were shocked when I suggested they come by the following day instead so they could take a closer look in better light.
When the eventually turned up, they whole extended family came brothers/cousins etc. 5 20-something males turning up in the evening - would be very intimidating for a lot of people. Do people really think this is normal?

On the flip side, people selling cars can be just as irksome.

People who buy a car at night must be rather dumb, same for buying a car when it's raining. You just can't see any scratches or dents etc then.

The only advantage of seeing a car when it's getting dark is if it's near a street light you can see how bad the colour match is on panels that some times don't show up in the day time.

I found when selling my last car I had people calling and just asking how much, or making low offers. Personally I'd view the car before making an offer.

In the end I did agree a lower price over the phone, the kid turned up in the dark, offered less money, I said no so he handed over the cash without even barely looking at the car, no test drive or anything. Lucky for him the car was very good.

It's mostly the Asian folk who use the "what is last price" line. Time wasters.

Its a favourite among Arabs too..and they try every trick in the book to get anything for a pittance.. I have had enough of them now to even bother negotiating, if they dont like the price they can bloody well drive home again rather than waving cash in my face for half the value. Its especially bad in Ramadan as they seem to be up all night phoning all the small ads.

Yup. I've had this. The last bike I sold, the guy looked at it, commented on how good condition it was, turned the ignition on to check the mileage, turned it off again and handed over envelope of cash.
20 mins later a coffee was drank, paperwork signed and the bike was in the back of his van. Didn't want to ride it, didn't want to check the history, didn't even run the engine.

Its amazing that people do this.

I sold a Vauxhall Vectra (admittidly it was an absolute knacker) to a guy from Georgia who didnt even want the V5 document, i had to force the paperwork on him and signal to him that i need him to sign it so i can post it off! :p

It's amazing how different some buyers can be. I sell electronics fairly regularly - usually second hand laptops around £100-£200. It's not uncommon for buyers to spend a good 20 minutes testing every possible function of the laptop in great detail.

However, when I sold a camera and lens for £1500, the guy turned up and handed over the cash without even looking inside the box! The whole transaction probably took under 2 minutes.

Similar when I sold the girlfriends Corsa - he didn't want a test drive and only wanted £50 off the price. Awesome. Sold it 3 days after advertising it. Easiest car sale ever.

I sold my Z3 for crazy money - €11,000, with knackered front shocks, a keyed RHS, a cracked front bumper and not much left on the brakes. Well over a grand's worth of repairs and I only paid €12,000 4 years previously

We spent ages talking about it, looking at it. Started it up.
He made one offer - €11,000 - and walked off.
I called him up a bit later, accepted the offer and he came round with a deposit a few hours later.

I asked if he was sure he didn't even want to go for a little drive as he'd just bought the bloody thing. He said sure, why not. But he was happy without it! I looked trustworthy, all the papers were in order and there we go.

I do regret selling it, but at that price it was a no-brainer.

We've had a number of cars but I recently sold my wifes car privately and thought it would be a walk in the park. NOPE!

Initially I listed at a higher price to allow for haggle room and received barely any contact, one lady came by but was too shy to haggle and bought another car because it was cheaper. Ok, lesson learned. Pulled the price down to match others on sale and just received nothing but cheeky offers and time wasters coming to drive around only to confess they didn't have the cash.

Just as a few lads here have mentioned, I started to get tired of that and decided to ask if they could afford the car since every one to date had come over and told me they couldn't afford to pay more than x% of the listed price. So the next one to call, I asked, they came and bought the car after minor haggling.

You also end up losing cash paying insurance if it sits on the market for a while and you aren't using it.

I don't see what the problem is, if their offer is less than the price you are happy with then you say no and let them increase it or walk away. Being pushy on the phone or stating you won't take less than £xk on the advert is off putting to buyers.

Agree with this. If I feel the advert is overly firm then I assume the seller will be a pain to death with and move in to the next advert.

I've only sold 2 cars to date,

my 330i:

and my 335d:

http://www.twilight-photography.co.uk/335d_sale/

Both sold to the first buyer, within £200 of asking. 335D was actually a funny one, i wasn't in a rush to sell and i knew it was a good example so i held out on the price. First guy viewed it in November, then didn't actually buy it until March! He was a lurker on here if i remember rightly.

Time has come again though :( Knocked this together but not actively put it anywhere yet.

There is actually a time constraint for the first time, I'm moving abroad first week of September!

Lets see how it goes, the weather should help sell it I hope.

These are exactly the kind of buyers you want to put off. A bit of haggling is one thing, but offering close to half the advertised price is just ridiculous and means you are dealing with a time wasting moron.

Unless I was absolutely desperate to sell I would just walk off at that point.

Wouldn't phase me in the slightest. Just means the seller doesn't want to deal with the kind of time wasters that I despise, I have no problem with that at all.

Very nice mate, I think the price is good and should sell for that. If it wasn't for house purchase I would've definitely taken that off you :)

Out of interest, over 100k mileage, is there anything of note that needs replacing or major service coming up?

Haha, if I was closer I'd bite your hand off :p

Change the ad to state you will not accept a price below a certain point and if anyone plans on it, don't bother contacting you. Saves a lot of hassle.

Seems like a bullet to foot. If you state you wont accept offers below x, then everyone will just offer you x, regardless of your asking.
