No stars, so not an official thread :p

But the web seems to have all gone a bit rumour crazy over the Nexus 8. Some saying LG are making it, others saying Asus. And rumours of an April launch.

Either way, a Nexus version of the LG 8.3, or a new Asus with a high resolution 8" screen, ill be getting one to replace my 2012 N7.

Anyone else jumping on the completely unconfirmed totally rumour driven potentially totally non existent band wagon with me :)?

Wasn't there rumours of it using an Intel SoC? Not sure how I feel about that, I think I may still have a couple of apps that only works on ARM, but haven't checked it recently. However, Intel does need the boost to compete against other mobile SoC manufacturers.

is this to replace the nexus 7 (2013)?

if so then surely it's a bit early for a replacement? i think november would be the right time for one.

whats happened to the 10? have they scrapped that range then i take it?

It does make sense in a way if 7" and 10" Nexus tablets are both popular to try something in the middle. As long as it's light enough to be handheld but has extra space over the Nexus 7 they could be onto a winner.

Disclaimer: all the below is just consolidation of all the rumoured I've read.

So, apparently...

Google are feeling the competition on the 7" market with saturation leading to poor sales of the 2013 Nexus 7. They are also competing against the larger 5 to 6" phones, which may include their own Nexus 6 soon if that line of rumours is to be beleived.

The iPad Mini has created a less crowded but growing 8" market that Google feel they will compete better in this time around, so the new tablet is rumoured to be an 8".

The Nexus 7 was refreshed after just 12 months and with poor sales of the 2013 model it wouldn't be to much of a stretch to imagine they want to replace it sooner rather than later. April would be about 10 months after the precious model. But it could also be announced in April and released in summer.

Asus and LG are the rumoured options for a manufacturer due to the next phone being rumoured to be Motorola (and therefore Google wanting to hold onto LG after the success of the Nexus 5).

HTC are in the rumours around the next 10" tablet, not the 7/8". However, there has apparently been big delays and heel dragging with the 10" replacement, and coupled with the move to 8" in the smaller range has lead to rumours that the 10" option may be dropped completely. There is certainly a lot less "unnamed supply chain vendor" style rumours about a Nexus 10 out there.

As I said, all just rumour, but it does seem pretty logical. Annual refreshes seem the norm now, and it would make sense to kill off an under performing device early if there's a headline replacement for it.

I'm willing to bet my house on it not having an SD slot though :(.

Bull. Its because the pricing by capacity model allows vendors to charge massive premiums for larger capacity versions of devices with almost zero additional manufacturing cost.

Apple started it, everyone else caught on and now its become just the accepted way.

Well this is all very interesting, though I'll be annoyed if its instead of a 10", that's what I'm waiting for.

I think you're right, though fortunately I don't think Google take the **** quite as much as Apple.

Hmm...

Seems things have all gone a bit quiet on the Nexus 8 front after the HTC rumours prior to IO didn't come to anything. Is there any other news out there that I've missed?

The nVidia Sheild is a very nice looking tablet, but I'd much rather have something with proper Android on it that is going to be kept up to date.

Id rather have the shield, im sure nvidia will keep it up to date and it is pretty much stock android.

Exactly. The past shows that most vendors don't go much further than 12 months from launch before stopping updating. And those updates are much later than Google too.

it would be a strange decision to bring it out right now, will be autumn so the release can co incide with 5.0

The phones usually coincide with an Android release. The tablets have been earlier. Both the 2012 and 2013 versions of the Nexus 7 were released in July of that year.
