4k Gaming monitors worth it ?

Depends a bit game to game but for some games even over 1440 its a pretty big difference.

I'm not really convinced the current crop of 4K panels are generally suited to gaming though, I've not tried the Samsung though which seems to have more positive comments in regards to gaming use.

Other issues aside the ones I've tried so far have really poor clarity in motion with overdrive off or turned down and distracting amounts of overdrive artifacts if you turn it up.

I'm loving Borderlands 2 at 4K. Upping the resolution made little difference to Starcraft 2, though.

What sort of settings/frame rates are you getting from borderlands at 4k? Love that game with a passion, can't wait for the pre sequel :D

Nice to see someone else from Aberdeen here too ;)

I currently play games at 1440 Res and love it , am I going to see a massive change by moving to 4k ?

I went from 1440P and absolutely fell in love with gaming again. I feel it looks so much crisper over 1440 and have since ordered a Acer 4K G-Sync monitor :)

I know we are all different but that was my findings.

I personally have quite mixed feelings about gaming at the UHD resolution. It really does depend on the game and in most cases there are some elements that make you go 'wow' and some that look kind of rubbish in comparison. I also feel the graphical requirements for modern titles in UHD are a bit high. You can of course disable MSAA to reduce the performance hit. When you do so the hit in quality is significantly reduced compared to disabling MSAA lower resolutions, but some elements in most games again show off those 'jaggies'. They're smaller and somewhat less noticeable on the whole, but there are some elements that stand out still.

Really I feel that UHD is something that is going to get better in the future, but can still be enjoyed today. Again there are standout elements in most games that just look amazing compared to even the 2560 x 1440 resolution on a screen of similar size. I'm currently reviewing the U28D590D, with the aim of publishing that review next week. I'll also be publishing an article documenting my experience with '4K' as a resolution, not just in games but also on movies and the desktop.

You need to sit at under 2 feet to see the extra clarity, any further back and it's wasted perhaps. I had my 1440 IPS and 4k sammy side by side on the same games and at close range 4k is so much better. I'm never going below 4k now. The textures look much better and almost perfect in clarity. G-sync acer will be the final cherry on the 4k cake.

Some games it is really hard to get a good mouse feel compared to 1080/1440p, getting that compromise between precision in tighter/closer movement and the ability to move large distances over the display without effort is a lot harder (depending a lot on personal preference and mouse setup).

Stuff like Elite Dangerous is just incredible on 4K though, if you play that extensively even over 1440p its a pretty big deal IMO. I'm semi tempted to get a 3 panel 4K setup just for that game.

The only reason I really bothered was for multiboxing eve online clients - for a lot of other gaming useage I will probably be upgrading my XL2420T to whatever decent g-sync, 120+Hz 2560x1440 panel drops on the market in the next few months.

I don't really like the current 4k monitors, I'd wait till we see some cheaper 60hz ips panels

What is wrong with them? I have IPS 1440p and 4K TN and i really don't care about IPS any more. The samsung TN is at a point where it's image calibrates almost as good and does not have glow or clouding. Head on gaming i frankly don't want IPS now, there's no need unless you game from some funny viewing angle.

Gamma shift, etc. is still there but unless your doing something where its critical the color accuracy and general eye pleasing aspect of the color reproduction on this batch of 4K TNs is very good - they are 8bit + FRC panels so its not surprising.

Its definitely good enough to not bug me color accuracy wise - you have no idea how much the XL2420T makes me wince every time I look at it :S

EDIT: Would be nice if the blacks were a bit deeper but I can live with that and the reds are a little lacking on detail in some of the more complex areas compared to a good IPS on this AOC but not so much it bothers me.

Having contacted Samsung engineers and AOC about it and having tested for such things myself it actually seems likely that these monitors are 'true 10-bit'. Either way they're clearly 'high quality TN' panels as some people would say.

And for everyone on the fence about '4K' or for those who have it but want another perspective on things you'll love this upcoming article I'm working on. It's pretty massive. I was originally going to integrate it into the Samsung UHD review but decided it was far too large and detailed for that. ;)
