Just been watching some videos of Elite Dangerous and it looks very cool and interesting, my question is as a total noob to games like this will I struggle to get into it?

If you try to do too much at once you may find it a bit over whelming, suggest you do the training missions first. Then jump in to multiplayer and focus on getting your ship from one point to another. focus on small things and gradually build this up.

The hardest thing I found initially was all of the controls, voice attack can help with this.

You will need to invest some time and there will be frustration that comes with it, persevere through this and you will find it a very rewarding game.

What a great response, thank you all so much :-)

So, the overwhelming thought is Elite then. Problem solved.

I was really blown away by the shiny RSI website and the amount of work that has gone into seemingly milking the concept for every penny it's worth. I had no idea they were so far off the milestones.

I loved Elite when I was younger, I'm sure it'll live up to my expectations.

Cheers guys.

SC will be a great game...

...at some point in the future.

I have no doubt all the problems will be ironed out and it will be a blast to play. However I also have no doubt that it will be a long wait.

Regarding ED - from what I've seen it's more of a game that just happens to be set in space. It's more about the concept and theory of a game, and the rules and freedoms involved. Space just happens to be the setting chosen for past reasons. I don't feel any connection to the game's lore or universe in that way.

Whereas SC is aiming to be a fleshed out and immersive experience - they are simply having trouble with the "game" part, ie translating the vision of this experience into something that can be played as a game.

 they are pretty much identical, so how do you feel so differently. How can you say it's set in space just because? That makes no sense.

The only real difference is, SC is planning all the bells and whistles from the get go, ED will build it up with add one. There's very little difference in the end game.

I wouldn't say they're pretty much identical, because they control far too differently. Granted SC is in the early stages still, but it controls terribly at this point in time.

It's fantastic so far!

The level of control over the subsystems of the ship is exactly how I remember it. I can see me sinking a lot of hours into this game!

It looks nice "in the flesh" so to speak. Screenshots don't do this game justice which was one of the main reasons I was looking into SC. After spending half an hour going through the scenarios it really is a good looking game.

You really need to spend some time learning the controls ;-)

Based on Braben's mind set in all the interviews I've watched - his vision is for a game and the freedom and consequences that can occur in a game. He said himself that space was only chosen for the older games for technical reasons, and ED being in space is just continuing the legacy.

Whereas CR is all about creating a vision of humanity in space in the future - and a game is the means of people accessing it.

To me that is a vast difference in philosophy, and one of the things that turns me off about ED. While I will likely buy it on release and it will be a fun game to play, the universe and lore is largely cold and meaningless to me.
SC has the potential to be a lot more involved and immersive, where the lore is concerned.

I've added a poll, although I'm not sure how much of a conclusion can be drawn from simple figures such as this as they are at different stages in development.

Not at all. As it ends up with the same game.
And you can't make ED other than in space, that whole thing if for legacy makes no sense. It's a space game,

Don't forget to stop by the official thread for the game and absorb all the information. There's a nice video on tips for ship controls on the current page in the thread you should watch. Have fun! :)

As many have said I would back ED if you want something to play sooner as SC is a long way off. I've backed both (SC a little more ;)) and I don't doubt SC is going to be something very special, in a couple of years...

ED is a much more sandbox, progressively generated content game with much more limited hand crafted specific content which tbh isn't really a style I'm a big fan of whereas SC is the opposite with the main content extensively manually created and the freeroam/sandbox aspect not so extensive.

Unless anything changes though ED looks like the game that is gonna make it past the goalposts any time soon.
