Govt considering £10 additional congestion charge on diesel cars in London

Well well well. It seems that diesels are not as clean as originally hoped and the government are considering an additional £10 levy on them in central London in addition to the congestion charge.

Personally I am not surprised at all and another incentive is the tax revenue of course.

Still don't understand why road tax is based on CO2 emissions, there a lot more harmful gasses produced from cars (specially diesels).

Good. Hopefully they will start forcing the black cabs off the road as well. They, buses (that are becoming hybrid) and trucks are the worst offenders.

Just buy a newer Euro6 compliant diesel. Simples.

Don't know how that actually helps the environment though.

That's just it though. I'd love to have a new Euro6, but cannot afford to buy one!

It doesn't. What it does do is put £2-4K of your finest pounds into the treasury.

Tough, pay the congestion charge then or buy a post 2006 petrol....that's why we don't tax the rich who can afford to buy a shiny new compliment diesel.

Particulate matter is actually a poison.

Diesels are not cleaner. They have lower CO2 and that is pretty much it.

Also the argument of mpg is not quite fair either as 1 litre of petrol has less joules of energy than diesel, so from day one it is an unfair comparison.

This!!

They release less CO2 and CO on average than a petrol car, but they emit far more NOx and SOx gases. Then there's the particulates from them, whether they're reduced by a DPF or not.

edit: Also, the dagdagdag rattle really ****** me off.
