Cars you nearly purchased and now regret not buying...

Hi there

So who here has maybe had cars in their shortlist in the past but for whatever reason purchased something else and now regret not buying one of those other cars maybe for appreciation reasons to the point it would not be a struggle to own/afford such a vehicle?

An example for me was when I got the 911, a car I absolutely love driving and don't regret one bit but the cars I looked at and/or drove were:-
Audi RS4
Audi R8
BMW E9x M3 DCT
Corvette Z06 7.0l
TVR Sagaris
Nissan R35 GTR
Dodge Challenger
BMW 1M
Ferrari 360 F1
Focus RS
Porsche Cayman S
Porsche 911 GT3 (996.2)
Porsche 911 C4S (997.1)
Porsche 911 Turbo S (996)
Porsche 911 Turbo (997)
Aston Martin V8 Vantage
Jaguar XK-R

So as can be seen before I came to the decision of buying a 911 I looked at a lot of possibilities and even test drove most of them. :)

However there is one that now financially would be a real stretch to achieve and regret not buying a few years ago when easily affordable and for the fact that if I had gone with such a vehicle it would now be worth more than double what I paid for it, infact probably triple.

So for me the car I regret not buying and what will now be a hard one to buy outright for cash would be:-

TVR Sagaris

TVR's best car, built/funded by the Russians and completely insane and wild, looks unique but great and reliability is considered good just like the Tuscan 2 with plenty of specialist in the UK offering good rates.

When I was looking at these cars they were priced at 17-25k, now your looking to pay 50-65k, that is some great appreciation and who knows they could continue appreciating afterall the brand no longer exist so they are a true collectors car.

Do I regret buying the 911, not at all, I thoroughly love driving it, but do I regret not buying a Sagaris when they were sub 20k, damn right!

So what cars have you considered in the past and now wish you'd made the move and why?

That is such a stunning car!

I've always admired the TVRs and would drool as they drive past. The looks and the noise is just something special - shame they're so expensive to buy now, not to mention repair bills.

I don't regret buying my M5, not at all, but I do think I bought an "old mans" car and there's always something niggling at me saying I should have gone with the noble or something similar first... but that meant betraying BMW, and also would have increased the probability I wouldn't be around anymore to type this post :D

edit: lol i completely missed the point of the thread :o

Wot

17-25 is extremely affordable for a car with that performance? why so cheap I wonder? Do they fall to bits?

They are now 55k (50k when new).

At the time I guess the market had still not reacted to TVR no longer being around and as such they had depreciated from their 50k price as new.

Now they are selling for more than they were to buy brand new. CSL's are same, 1 owners, sub 10,000 mile CSL's sell for over £50,000.

I had a chance to lease a Lotus Exige when I started at a new place back in 2005/6. Was a stupidly low price for the car (it was around the £250 mark, fully maintained and insured) but I was still getting used to home ownership and living with the GF (now wife!).

Still regret it now.

My first is not in the same league as above but when an impecunious site engineer and running a rotting Fiat twin cam 1600 saloon (the model escapes me) the length of the country, I needed a better car.

I had a choice of two cars in good cheap condition offered,

3000E Ford Capri Mk 1
Triumph TR6

I chose the Ford mainly for interior space reasons but in retrospect the Triumph would have had more class.

The one that really got away though was a friend bought two 3.8 E type coupes for a song (about £750 each) in the 1970's. He wanted me to go halves and I could not afford it at the time. Kicked myself several times over the years

Love the Sagaris. It's also a TVR that can handle well. Don't get me wrong, it can still kill you good, but is pretty much planted in comparison to all the other TVRs. Love that straight six n'all.

A mint guards red 944 S2, with the the M030 upgrades and the proper black leather bucket seats.

Would be worth much more money now, and no doubt keep going up in price.

Oh to go back 6 years :(

Not too much by way of regrets so far, but saying that I've only been driving 7 years, so I can't really say I've regretted not buying anything yet. Saying that, I do wish I’d bought an E46 M3 when I was living at home. I could have had it paid off and in top shape condition now.

Looking back in hindsight and saying "wish I'd have bought that because they appreciated" is akin to saying "I wish I'd have played the correct lottery numbers”, it’s just a financial decision that people have very little control over.

It's more interesting, I think, to see which cars people regretted not buying simple because they craved them!

Drive them smooth and the handling is superb, but as you say bit of loud pedal and they want to kill you, though they are controllable. :)

Quite a few LS7 conversions at there now too.

Making it grip by driving smoothly isnt quite the same as quantifying the handling attribute. Great handling car are inherently chuckable.

They are quite chuckable too as well m8, but know exactly what you mean, but with Sagaris you can throw them about and they seem to relatively easy to control from speaking to owners of them. :)

My only regret isn't really as exciting or expensive!
I was off to buy my second car, having driven around in a Mk1 1.1 Golf as my first one. I'd decided on a Mk2 Golf, and had a deposit down an a Mk2 1.6 Ryder.
On the day we went to collect, the garage had a white Lancia Delta in full "Martini" livery on the forecourt for exactly the same price.
My dad was with me "Shall we have this one instead?" jokingly. It was my second car, I knew I'd never get that Lancia insured and I knew I'd be "safer" in the Golf.
But that was one might fine Lancia.

Nearly bought a 1987 BMW 316 chromie for £400. The shell was in excellent condition, the interior was in decent enough condition, and with a little bit of fiddling it would have been a good runner as well.

It got stripped, sold in bits and scrapped in the end.

Would have been a nicer thing to have than a Polo. :(

more of a regret of selling then not buying.
i have a horrible habit of selling my cars and bike yearly and they saying i want them back lol only 2 i haven't wanted back being honda ctr and rx8( the second time round)
