Mavericks

Unless you need your old drive for data, you should be able to boot into the usb and install to the SSD.

Might have to create a partition in disk utility, but it should work fine.

When I swapped out SSDs in the last upgrade it went something like this:

1) Download Mavericks, pull out ESD and write to USB. Test boot.
2) Backup to TM.
3) Install new SSD.
4) Boot USB, install Mavericks.
5) Point migration assistant at TM backup, go and have a beer.

That's cool, it's just some users were saying there SSD's were never found. I'll see what happens, shouldn't be a problem.

Depends on what SSD.

Personally I would only use Samsung, Crucial or Intel in a Mac. Or Toshiba, but I've not had the pleasure.

Avoid OCZ, or anything with Sandforce in it.
