ISIS and Islamic militants - discussion

When I read statements like this "Many Muslims and other groups view Yazidis as devil worshippers" I can't help but think the whole world could be made a lot more peaceful by abolishing religion. To think people are slaughtering others over issues which seem so trivial to me as a non religious person is madness. Then again, if it wasn't religion it would no doubt be something else used as an excuse to push the extremists own agendas.

Why is it always down to the Americans? Would be nice to see some muslim countries/religious leaders expressing their support for bringing ISIS down, or at the very least regularly condemning their actions.

They have - Iran is providing a lot of support to the Iraqi govt, Syria is actively fighting IS too. This is why its tricky for the US to intervene - go too far and they're only really helping with a short term fix, crush some militants but leave a situation in place whereby the Shia still dominate.

If Iraq wants help from Saudi, Quatar etc.. then they'd have to do something that might have prevented this issue with IS being such an issue in the first place - stop marginalising the Sunni groups in the country. It was only a small number of IS fighters who initially made huge gains, they did so because the Sunni either didn't fight them or actively helped them, to some they were a better alternative than the Shia dominated govt that had marginalised them.

oh and kurdistan are now begging for american help LOL

I find it funny since the stupid kurds had a truce with isis not officially but a truce non the less and wouldn't help the rest of iraq

the Kurds were hardly in a position to solve the issue, not fighting IS and simply securing their own territory works to further their cause - after all they're trying to achieve independence

Eh...? You do know curry comes (mostly) from India right? I know you think alll those "darkies " look the same but still...

technically his slightly bigoted 'joke' can still work - most 'Indian' restaurants are run by Bangladeshi Muslims.

You ever heard Imagine by Lennon?

Nuke the middle east and be done with it. Would solve most of the worlds problems.

(not entirely serious)

About time too. At least the Americans are doing something unlike the rest of Europe, albeit a few air strikes probably will just slow down ISIS rather than anything really tangible.

I somehow think we're quite safe from the scientific masterminds in ISIS needed to create a nuclear bomb

Baseball sized hunk of weapons grade uranium (may be plutonium) plus a stick of TNT and you can irradiate a few square miles and the people in it, detonate in a subway/underground and it will be uninhabitable for a very long time.

Yea easy as that init! That's why its happened so often... oh wait.

In some ways it's a good thing, in others it's not a good thing.

As all I can see the cowardly snackbars doing is retreating to Syria to join the rest of IS and slaughtering people there instead. As soon as they start taking larger losses.

And once in Syria, it will be a case of out of sight out of mind

This is good news. Although as others have said far more than air strikes will be required to wipe out ISIS for good
