Choice of motor - 360 or GTR? (Or others!?)

I've never been a fan of the 360. I'd much prefer a top of the line, mint 355 GTS Manual (for the 'clack' :)) over any 360. I can appreciate the Engineering in the GT-R as well but I can't say they really float my boat in any major way.

Even a Strad? Arguably the best Fez since the F40?

Hello folks. Just wanted to pick your brains. If you had a choice between a Ferrari 360 (say 00-02 model) or Nissan GTR (say 09-10 model), which would you opt for?

(Ideally I would like you to chose from either of the above, but if you also have a preference outside of these two choices, I would gladly like to hear it, including personal experiences where applicable).

The reason for the purchase? I promised myself that one day I would love to own a Ferrari (but the Nissan just tickles me pink whenever I see one of the road!).

I'm sure I will get shot to bits for these choices, so I am at your mercy!

It sounds like the Ferrari is the dream car and the Nissan is just something that impresses you and is similar price wise. For this reason I'd get the Ferrari.

IMHO it doesn't even matter which one drives better if just walking up to the Ferrari and firing it up is enough to get you grinning.

I have always viewed the 360 as the poor mans Ferrari. Do not get me wrong you have to be quite wealthy to own one but they were a big seller (Biggest selling Ferrari iirc) and if I saw one now I would think the person is just trying too hard to impress as they are cheap and common. They look too modern to be considered a classic yet look dated at the same time. In a kind of no mans land.

What I am trying to say is get a 355 :p.

The 360 and 430 are considered to be an absolute joy to drive, poor mans Ferrari is something I've never heard before.

Driven the 360 and it's probably the only car I've driven that's up there with the 911 for driving pleasure and the engine note is unreal. 360's are quite reliable but running cost are high and if it breaks it can become very costly.

As great as 355 is and a classic, I'd prefer the drive of the 360, much more capable. :)

My favourite Ferrari is the 430, love the looks and last of the analogue Ferrari's.

At 30k look at 911's, they offer the same level of drivers car and are one of the best steers you can get, GTR simply does not compare and running cost are lower but still expensive. As suggested a Cayman is very low cost to run and a great drive too.

You didn't have to say that at all :D I can hear you scream it throughout the post and actually I share your views.

The problem is the 355 is actually very closely priced to the 360...

Really? Im hearing more and more that the 911 is a more affordable solution, but to be honest, you just see so many damned 911s around these days...

And you don't rate the GTR in this mix you say?

I would really like to get an approximate comparison of running costs of say a 360 vs a GTR vs a Cayman....

I own one :)

I always see comments like this by people who have never driven one or owned one. You get it with Evo's a lot, 'the car does it all for you' etc. It's just forum talk. I'm presuming that your roll-eyes smiley means that your comment was tongue in cheek.

People who have the means and the desire to own an run a 14 year old Ferrari do not need to ask a small car section on a computer overclocking forum whether they should buy one or whether they should buy a Nissan instead. Therefore this is a fantasy thread, so my advice is buy the one that comes in the nicest colour.

Most definitely, it just always tickles me to see people saying how in-involving or boring a car is to drive…when they've never even been a passenger in one, let alone drive one with purpose.

Cav, I'll try and jump on Skype later if you're around, I can tell you how little I've spent on the GTR in the past 12 months :p

GTR is fun for a while but once you get used to the performance it has nothing else to offer.

Mine has 650bhp 610lbft and I kept it for less than 2 years, was looking at 15-20k for the next step up in performance (forged engine and bigger turbos) but decided to sell it as I knew the same thing would happen again.

We have a GTR thread on here :) http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18518623

I don't like Ferrari so wouldn't buy any of their cars.

Do as Gibbo says and look at Porsche.

This echos everything which i ever hear about the GTR;

One of my closest work colleagues has an '09 running approx 600hp, all i ever hear from him about it is that it doesn't offer him anything now that he is used to it. He is a massive Japanese car fan and also runs a Honda ITR, he actually drives that in preference to the GTR a lot of the time. That says quite a lot to me.

This is really great stuff, thanks very much to everyone, Im a novice petrol head and was afraid I was going to get shot down, but the responses have really been informative.

I was wondering when you were going to show up here bud :) Yes definitely, Im going to be out all day, so perhaps we can have a chat this evening? Cheers fella.

Firstly, thanks for the thread link! I didn't realise there was a thread about GTRs on here.

And as to Gibbos advice, it pains me but I am also giving it due consideration. The Cayman is a lovely little motor, and more affordable....

But I still have the Ferrari bug....

Will sit down later and do some calculations to make sure I can afford the Ferrari, if not then will consider the GTR or the Cayman.

I don't suppose anyone has happened across a useful link or thread concerning running costs of a Cayman?

Drove a 360 round a track, was the paddle shift, can't say I was that impressed tbh! Sounded awesome though :p

I felt the same, drove the 360 around silverstone. I found that it made an epic noise and drove well enough but I was pretty underwhelmed. I didn't feel that it really had anything to offer over my 911. I would still have one over the gtr though.

Is the 360 an engine out service car? I know the 355 is, if it is you would need to think pretty seriously about it. Engine out servicing is going to add a big old chunk to servicing, each time the engine has been out of my car its ended up costing several thousand each time.

I did the exact same at Silverstone and felt underwhelmed too, I reckon they limit it or detune it.

I've driven a GTR elsewhere and compared to that particular 360 that I drove, I'd happily take the GTR.
