I don't think I could pick or vote, had Dogs and cats most of my life. Both brought many happy memories and laughs inc some not so funny moments when my old dog ran into a newly installed double glazing back door (he was fine though after). :)

Are we doing that thing where we take a negative trait that some animals display and then apply that to all members of the species and act like they all do it?

Hey, I was mugged by a group of black guys once. I now fear and hate all black people because they're all thieves. Makes sense, right?

Fact. Cats are cuter by a factor of 1x10^dawwwwww. In addition...

They purr, which gives off these amazing vibrations and is very enjoyable.
They can fit neatly into your trousers if you need them to.
They have rough tongues.
If you aren't in the mood, they will sod off and do their own thing.
They are perfect size for sitting on laps.
They eat less and poo less.
They can be trained to poo like humans.
Don't eat or roll in every excreted substance they find.
Like to rub themselves against you.
Keep your bed warm without turning the heating on.

I could go on.

You don't touch Kitty in his special place do you?

Deny the cuteness, you damaged man! I dares yeh!

Yes, I know it's obvious bait. Now shut up and bask in the cuteness

I have both, a designer cat and a Rottweiler.

Dogs smell, cats don't
Dogs shed hair everywhere, I could hoover 4 times a day and it wouldn't keep things clean. Cats do not (well, my cat doesn't!)
Dogs need walking and constant attention, cats don't
Dogs need lots of food, cats don't
Left alone the dog could conceivably quite happily destroy my kitchen/sofa etc, cats cannot
Dogs cannot survive more than a few hours without a human to tend to them, cats can
Dogs have minging habits like - licking the penis of other dogs, eating poo, rolling in poo, drooling, eating their own vomit, chewing up vile objects, cats don't
Ever seen a dog drink and then walk away? Poor design.
Dogs are eager to please to the point where it almost disgusts me, cats are far less pathetic.
Don't even start me on toilet training cats v dogs.
Dogs have a far greater arsenal of annoying noises to make - barking, growling, howling, whimpering, whistling through their noses

So, I prefer cats.

If you died at home and nobody found you, your cat would eat you when it got hungry.

A dog however, would starve.

Cats indoors are fine, they defecate on your property. Cats outside should, IMHO, be considered suitable for pest control while on other people's property. Cat owners should take some responsibility for their animals by not letting them run loose. If keeping them indoors is a problem then get a dog and clean up after it.
