10k budget

I need a daily/weekend car though mostly for weekends as I use tube for most of the week.

Primary requirements:
- Must be very very comfortable to drive, particularly on long journeys (2 hours+) as me and missus do a lot of road tripping on the weekends.
- Needs to be fairly practical (Saloon, Crossover or Large'ish coupe)
- Needs to be fairly economical, though not a huge deal as driving will be limited to mostly weekends as I mentioned. I expect maybe 5-10k miles per year.
- Automatic slushbox but would be nice if there were paddle shifters for a bit of fun on country roads.

Cars I've considered are:
- Audi A5 / A5 Sportback / A4 (2008-2010) 2.7D as the 2.0D and TFSI's seem to be much more expensive
- BMW 520D (2008-2010)
- Lexus IS250 (2008-2010)
- Mini Countryman / Cooper S (2008-2010)
- Nissan Juke (2008-2010)

Problem is, each review I read notes some glaring problems with all of these cars either in transmission, reliability or consumption.

Any suggestions?

Yea I think that's probably a bit too big for us right now. I was thinking more mid-size.

It's really frustrating as it seems to be impossible to find S-Class / 7 series refinement in the mid-size category with the exception of maybe an XF which I can't really afford at the moment.

I found this one on AT but it seems to be dodgy as it can't possibly be that cheap in that spec, also the seller should be contacted "directly" on some gmail address.

That is a scam, avoid.
A 2010 Mondeo with a 2L Ecoboost engine.
Typical! :p
Hardly economical. ;)

You'd have to be off your noggin to spend £10k on a Saab 9-5

Superb is.....superb if you can deal with the size of it.

Other than that you might struggle a bit for the criteria you've set (if you're really looking for XF+ levels of refinement), the Audi is ok, 5 series ok (but i'd maintain that's quite a lot of money for one), Lexus is very very quiet but you'd need to live with the relative lack of power/economy whilst the others I can only assume are a joke (/Juke) :p

I have nothing but respect for Mondeo, I drove one for 3 years and it was flawless. But that one cost me 1.8k...I feel 10k on a mondeo is a bit, don't know, a bit of a waste?

Why can you afford a 5 series or A4/5 but not an XF?

Sorry - I meant to say Facelifted XF (2012+). Not a huge fan of the pre 2012 design but I am thinking it is probably better than anything else in the price range as I can find quite a few sub 10k.

My concern here with the older 2.7D's is that I've been reading various review sites about it and it seems that early versions 2007/2008 suffered all kinds of electrical gremlins and the 2.7D in general had an alarming high number of total engine failures and other bits and bobs.

I can't find anything that suggests if these were ever fixed so if someone buys a 2007/2008 version now, would the electrical gremlins still exist and how would you mitigate engine failure/turbo failure/etc

Honestjohn.co.uk lists a whole bunch of issues with the XF and contrary to what I've read elsewhere seems to suggest the XF is the least reliable luxury car according to JDpower?
