So wife and kids have been on at me for absolutely ages on getting a dog. I've done a pretty good job at holding them off, but I think the eventual outcome will be a dog !

So please spec me a dog ?

We live in a very clean and tidy house, and this has been my reason thus far on holding back.. So first and foremost it has to be a breed that doesn't chew up the damn house.

One that doesn't shed too much hair around the joint.

One that doesn't stink the place up.

It has to be hypoallergenic. (if that's possible ?) since my youngest boy 7 yrs old is a little susceptible to allergies.

It'll have to be fairly smallish, like Jack Russell size.

It doesn't need to be a guard dog, since i live in a very safe community.

It will be left alone for half a day as my missus is only part-time.

I live in very hot climate, so its either summer here or blisteringly hot summer. So a dog that can handle the heat. (home is AC) but when its talking walks.

Where I live, they're anal about letting dogs off their leash. (they fine you!) So it'll never be able to run free, it'll always apart from special occasions, like at the dog park, always be subjected to being on a lead.

A stuffed one. They're just as good as the real thing;

Toy Poodle and keep it's hair clipped short for the heat. Poodles are the best out there for allergies and not leaving hair everywhere. That's why there are so many poodle crossbreeds about.

You can't really claim any dog is hypoallergenic despite what you'll see from many breeders. Even specific breeds which are claimed to be hypoallergenic isn't really true as individual dogs vary wildly there is no guarantee.

The main things you need to watch for allergen wise is dander and saliva, both of which vary by breed and individual dogs from those breeds.

All dogs shed to some extent, the main difference is between dogs who shed and then gets caught in their own coat and dogs who shed where the loose hair falls out. The former camp includes dogs like Cairn Terriers, Poodles, Poodle cross-breeds (although varies wildly individually).

From your list, the only thing that fits all the requirements is a stuffed toy dog.

I would advise against getting a dog. I have a Rottweiler (a breed that doesn't really shed a great deal compared to some) and I am hoovering twice a day minimum - and it still isn't enough really.

Rottweilers also fall into the "less smelly" camp, and I can still smell the doggyness. I hate it, it drives me mental.

Also have you seen most dogs drink? Ugh.
