Has anyone travelled nationally to see a car they like? I've found a car that ticks all the boxes but is 200 miles away. I'm trying to weigh up either driving there to view the car, then leaving a deposit and then taking the train to collect the car, or be optimistic and take the train up there to view the car with the intention to drive it home there and then.

200 miles isn't that far. I'd take the train, view it and if you don't like it, just take the train back.

I've driven an 8 hour round trip to see a car before. Definitely not an issue for a car at the right price and right spec.

And I thought I was travelling far to see a car this Sunday lol 63.8miles to be exact.
I told the missus whilst were there might as well make the most of the journey and go Bicester village lol.

Off topic, get there before 10 because it gets busy. I'm there a lot as my wife works there.

Not got a mate who fancies a roadtrip? Only worth it if spec and car are rare and price is competitive.
Unfortunately not. I had one lined up but they're busy. Here's a link:

The spec is pretty good, pretty much what I want out of a car.

Depends on the car, if it was something like a standard Focus, I would never waste half a day traveling to see a car that is so common and can be sourced locally quite easily. Would only travel for something either rare, special, or a crazy bargain price.

From Sheffield:

DB9 - Exeter
X5 - Welwyn
Porsche - London
530i - London
530i - Southampton

Most were train down jobs.

You can't expect the car to come to you and a telephone call generally gives your gut feeling the red or green light.

I don't expect it to come down to me! Just trying to gauge opinion. The furthest I've travelled is from Reading to Bristol for my ST220 in 2008.

I will definitely be going to view the car, just not sure if I should take the train the first instance and drive it home, or be more cautious and drive up to see it.

Newcastle > Bristol to get my last car

If it's what you want I'd go with the intention to buy it then. But I'd negotiate a starting price you are happy to pay before you go. Then any issues with it when you are there, you try and reduce the price if necessary.

if the specs et.c are all what you're looking for, get an insurance quote online so that if necessary you can simply phone up, give them a reference number and be insured within 5 minutes. saves giving you all details over the phone.

if it's not right, it's a shame but keep on looking, i'm sure another will pop-up :)

I got my current car from a place ~100 miles away - probably wouldn't have travelled that far if it wasn't for the fact the dealer was just round the corner from my MIL so we dropped in there for the day too.

One thing to bear in mind is the hassle if anything goes wrong with the car. Mine ended up developing a fault a couple of days later - the trader were great about it and ultimately it ended up getting fixed, but it was a pain having to travel back down there to get it sorted.
