Skoda

Thanks. Do headlight washers = xenons on these then? On many cars, mine included, they're there whether or not you've got projectors/xenons. But if that's not the case then that makes it easier to detect in adverts whether or not it has them.

I guess it's handy that they've all got projector lenses, so if I had one without xenons I'd just put some xenon bulbs into the projector housing and then retain the dashboard adjustment of height.

Hello Skoda folk,

I am considering purchasing a mk2 facelift Octavia VRS (petrol, of course) and I have a few questions if you don't mind:

1. I'm after one with nav (Columbus unit?) and the maxidot display - will this facilitate bluetooth audio streaming (A2DP)? I'm not averse to a spot of retrofitting if updated modules or whatever need to be fitted, but I'd like to keep it "OEM" - so no Bluetooth > line in adapters or anything like that.

2. Steering wheel controls - these seem non-existent on the manual models. Is this retrofittable?

3. Heated seats - again seem non-existent. Do many crop up with it as an option? Was it even an option?

4. Xenons - ditto question 3. Retrofittable?

5. Remapping - simple map up to ~240bhp... Worth doing, or is there a weak spot in the engine/drivetrain that makes it not worthwhile?

6. Anything specific to look out for when buying one, other than the usual stuff?

Thanks :)

Skoda kind of give you a choice between the toys or the engine...

vRS = 2.0T, 200 hp, slightly upgraded SE spec
Laurin & Klement = 1.8T, 160 hp, all the kit like Xenons, heated seats, MFSW, etc.

edit: Columbus is an easy retrofit (eg. http://www.oemretrofits.co.uk/satnav-skoda.shtm)

Spec-wise, the L&K looks perfect. Trouble is I think I'd lose most of the 'sporting pretension' without the more focussed VRS chassis. Why couldn't have Skoda treated the VRS as a sporty AND high spec model :(

What is the difference between the L&K and the VRS from a handling perspective? Brakes and suspension components? Or are there more fundamental differences as well?

If it is just brakes and suspension components, you could always fit some VRS kit to an L&K and then re-map it. That way you will have a car which matches the VRS in performance and handling, but has all the toys as well. :D

Indeed.

Probably because it would steal Golf sales :p

The rear spoilers are very prone to having the paint come off, so make sure you check that and adjust the price accordingly if it's damaged.

Also personally if I was to get another one (I like mine so I won't :) ) I'd get one that's had a K04 conversion already done on it. They aren't really any more expensive than the non converted ones and it just adds large amounts of power. Example:

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/323964-sold-mk2-octavia-vrs-with-k04-conversion-352bhp/

Although make sure it's been done by a well recognised tuner.

Hi Howard. I own a FL vrs petrol like you're after and finding one with a good spec is really tough. My situation was slightly different and had to buy around January time when there wasn't much choice, but I saw hardly any with xenons, Bluetooth, heated seats like you've mentioned above. Most of the high spec vrs are on the diesels unfortunately! I believe the Bluetooth is present on the Columbus, which I think is the 2011 versions onwards.

I haven't got mine remapped yet but I will look at it next year I reckon. My local does the DNA remap and they reckon they can easily get 245-255!

It's a fantastic car though and worth waiting for in my opinion. The engine is good and the economy is very decent for the performance - I average 36mpg with no motorway driving and did get 42mpg on a long run earlier in the year. The boots also not mentioned much, but it's huge and perfect if you golf like me :)

What colour are you looking for btw? Got mine in race blue and it looks great

If I had a VAG I wouldn't go anywhere other than R-Tech for a remap. Undisputed reputation and you can guarantee to have one of the best 'custom' maps on the market.

I know there's also the likes of Badger 5 and Shark, but my experience with R-Tech was fantastic, I'd definitely go there again!

Thanks! I don't really care about the colour, I'm more fussed about spec :)

It's a shame you don't live closer otherwise I'd bribe you with lunch or something in order to see what yours is like :).

Hello Skoda folk,

1. Cars were bought with all the options you listed, but of course finding one is the trick. Columbus and Maxidot together does not mean it has Bluetooth as that was a seperate option. Instructions on Briskoda about purchasing the OEM bluetooth modules and installing them under-seat.

2. Multi-function steering wheel was never an option on the manual car (for whatever reason). Can you retrofit? Yes, but in most cases you also need to update the steering controller - standard will be a mid-line controller and you will need a high-line controller. Along with changing the controller the new one will need coding. Join Briskoda and you'll find a directory of people who have the VCDS software you need and will offer to help you code it in. But you need to source both a controller and steering wheel - also there are two different types of controller, cartridge and ring - only observation will tell you which was used.

3. Yes, front heated seats were an option - I've got them in mine, although I did also take the leather option and you kind of needed them. It was a stand-alone option, but many people didn't take it. It was only ever the front seats that were heated. The more luxury models offered all around heated seats. Will be surprised if you easily find an example with them fitted.

4. Proper Xenons are not easy to retrofit. You need the lenses, ballast and of course the auto-levelling system. I had them factory fitted as an after-market option would be too cost prohibitive.
You could have course "do as the chavs" and fit an after-market, non-levelling kit for £75. But I'll stop all conversation on that subject now - becuase I have the things with a vengence.

5. Stage 1, software only map should see the car at around 240 - 250bhp, especially on the newer TSI engine found in the FL. No real weak spots to worry about and many, many people have a map in place. Briskoda favourites are Shark Performance and they do a good job.

6. FL fixed a lot of the issues that the pre-FL had. Look out for sill damage - still an issue on a lot of Skodas. Bodywork has extended warranty - but once it starts...
Make sure you get a good test drive and test at speed - cost savings on the door seals can mean some examples have a lot of wind noise at speed.
Check for "mayo" under the oil filler cap (rare).

I bought mine in 2011, in Anthracite, and I'm still enjoying it now.
From the factory I added the Columbus abnd Maxidot. Xenon lights, leather seats and the heated front seats. Also added the auto-lights and auto-dimming mirrors. Also added on the rear parking sensors - they also add graphical information on the Columbus. Since purchase I added the multi-function steering wheel - I purchased the wheel as new from a place in the Czech Republic and then Shark Performance fitted it for me, supplied the new controller and coded it all up.
Love the car to bits and I'm in no hurry to get rid of it.

Fair enough. Good luck with the searching though, not
many petrols about with good spec.

One thing which happened with mine that I found out was quite common, was the clutch bearing is a bit weak. Apparently it's quite a common fault on the GTi mk6 as well.

Nice octavia mate :). The estate is the best option too, so you don't have to deal with the rubbish paint on the spoilers on hatchback versions.

Had a nightmare with my vRS today.. Finished work and tried to turn it on and it wouldn't turn over. It's making a lot of noise and turns off after a few seconds. Got some mates to try and jump it as thought it was the battery, but AA later confirmed it was fine and he thinks the DMF has gone :(

From searches it looks like the DMF is covered under the warranty and luckily I've got one until February! Clutch and bearing go in march / April time and now the flywheel.. Not great.

Being towed to Milton Keynes tomorrow so really hope it's covered else I'm in for a big bill :(

Car's been towed up to Milton Keynes and i've now got the nervous 48 hour wait to hear back from them.

Skoda mentioned to me that some Warranties don't cover the diagnostic checks with the vehicles, which are about £140(!). Is this right or should I argue that this should be covered?

Driving around in a heavily advertised Rapid Spaceback 90hp Diesel as a courtesy car :p
