I was too busy being a PS2 fan boy ("Need4Speed undagrownd is da best game Eva yo") and masturbating in my room at this kinda era so I expect I missed some great games! Having picked up Allied Assault and No One Lives Forever 2 I would like to see if there are any more pc games that are as good as these from around this time!

Half-Life (inc. Opposing Force, Blue Shift, Decay)
Age of Empires II (HD remake is available on Steam too)
Age of Mythology (+ Titans Expansion)
Just Cause
Thief: Deadly Shadows

Bit older but still great
Thief Gold
Thief II

I just started playing Medal of Honor Allied Assault as well. Really enjoyin it! Spent countless hours on it when it came out but that was on the PS2. Gonna give Frontline a go next

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Black & White
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines
Civilization IV
The Sims
Half Life 2
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
F.E.A.R.
Beyond Good and Evil
Far Cry
Max Payne
Diablo II
WarCraft III
Psychonauts
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2
Deus Ex
Rome: Total War

I would be careful going back to old PC games.

For example I played Age of Empires 2 at LAN meeting, so limited experience of it. But got the HD version recently for nostalgia, and it's hard and dated. Don't know if it's my age or because gaming has moved on.

My two recommendations:
Giants: Citizen Kabuto - great story driven single player with humour.
Homeworld series - came out late 1999, but the two sequels came out 2000+

Edit: Gearbox are releasing re-mastered/HD version soon

AoE2 HD did have a bit of a problem when they introduced the new smart/harder AI in Patch 3.5 (I think?), and it was mentally hard even on Easy, I think that's been fixed now though. But even now I still love the game, played it when I was ~9, coming back to it at 18 and it's still fantastic!

Wow that's a lot of suggestions! I've been playing a lot of No One Lives Forever 2, very interesting and I like the art style / cut scenes!

I do have AoE 1 2 2HD and 3 but generally suck at it a lot. That's a great list from flibby, I think Physconaughts and Return to Castle Wolfenstein towill be added to the list of games.
