Hi guys,

I'm planning on buying a new monitor on Friday but I'm stuck on whether to go 4K or 1440. I've literally read the internet the past 24 hours on all aspects of the issue but can't make that final decision.

I've narrowed down to 4 options:

Samsung 27D850

Samsung 32D850

AOC Q2770PQU

Or the 4K side:

Samsung U28D590

I will be running MSi Z97 Gaming 9, i7-4790k, Kingston Hyper x 2 x 8GB 2400mhz, 240Gb Samsung Evo, Win 8.1, MSi R9 290x 4GB - possibly going for Crossfire on Friday also as I have everything else for the build now so may throw in the extra 290x

Any help/advice would be appreciated

Have you read the threads in the 21:9 monitor threads? :p

4K has a place but it's still in its infancy and even with Crossfired 290x cards you will find games that just don't pull framerates that are desirable. That and the usual Crossfire/SLi bugs that plague a few games.

4K will be a big thing in a few years to come once monitor technology matures and those screens get to the size they need to be to make use of that resolution.

The Samsung 27" you linked to above looks the most ideal if you're dead set on 2560x1440 but if it's the ultimate gaming immersion you're after have you considered a 21:9 ultra widescreen monitor? AOC will be releasing their 34" around October time and at the IFA show coming up shortly a bunch of manufacturers will also be showing their 21:9 monitors off.

Personally I think my own thoughts are shared with many others who have also jumped onto the 21:9 boat, that you should forget about 4K for now and immerse yourself better with an ultra wide.

Sure it might mean you wait a bit longer to get one but at least there's no doubt that you're going to get a new and unique experience for both gaming and video. It also means you won't need to spend another £300+ on a 2nd GFX card like you will do for 4K right now.

Would make list of the pro's and con's of each resolution.

I would start like:
1440p Pro's:
  1. affordable high image quality(IPS,AV and so on)
  2. up to 32 inch affordable
  3. Some even overclockable over 60hz
  4. Requires less GPU grunt to run.

1440p Con's:
  1. No TN solution other than the ROG SWIFT
  2. average to high response time(4+ ms)
  3. average to high input lag for 99,9% of the screens out there.

4k Pro's
  1. Even sharper picture
  2. Fast response times (1+ ms) for tn versions (which would help if you like fast games)
  3. Affordable if its a TN panel
  4. Insane amount of desktop/app real estate

4k Con's:
  1. Colors and viewing angles not as good as the 1440p in the same price bracket
  2. Requires a bit more GPU grunt to drive
  3. Hardware compatibility issues with some AMD GPUs(atleast according to some users here on this forum, good idea to do some research)
  4. IPS versions cost an arm and a leg
  5. Stuck at 60hz for now(havent heard of any succesful attempts of OCing a 4k screen but i may be wrong)

Thats a quick and dirty pro and con's list in my head. If i missed something or got something wrong im sure someone will correct me.

That's the one yeah, you can read all about it in the big 34UM95 thread!

A few have, others after a return and swap. I now have after much faff (although mine is slightly different story in that I bought it from damn Germany!).

If you get one from a UK store and it's a lemon then DSR it and chances are the next one will be good.

Do you have a link to it? I can only find the LG to Introduce 34-inch IPS 21:9 UltraWide (Model UM95) monitor thread and the smaller flatron owners thread.

Also can i ask what GPU/s you're using on yours?

That is the 34UM95 thread although at some point it did transcend into the other models but it's back on track and has been for a while. The back end of that thread is where to start, the first half is mostly before anyone got their hands on one and leading up to release etc.

I had an EVGA GTX780 3GB and now have a Sapphire 290x 4GB.

Yeah though some heavier games that rely on ample VRAM may be better on the 4GB. I found GTA4 especially ran smooth as silk at native res on the 290x whereas I had some stutters at the same settings on the GTX 780.

I'll be running at least one 290x for now, possibly a second in the future. Think I've decided to wait out for the AOC one, esp if the price is going to pull the pants down on LG by removing thunderbolt etc.
