Motorcyclists Last Seconds Captured On GoPro

Kinda depends also upon the driver's testimony - they might have been on the phone or anything.

This was from The Mirror:

The male driver of the Renault Clio David hit appeared in court following the accident.

The motorist admitted causing death by careless driving and got a 12 months community sentence in April and an 18 month driving ban.

He was also ordered to pay £200 costs with a £60 surcharge and do 130 hours unpaid work.

Ch Insp Spinks added: "We know from the footage that David was travelling up to 100mph. Regardless of the speed of the bike, the car manoeuvre should not have been attempted."

At 97mph the rider was covering in excess of 43 meters a second, in 2 seconds that's the length of a football pitch.

He was going way too fast and had he been going the right speed, both he and the driver would have had time to react.

I'm wondering if the driver missjudged the riders speed? Anyway the court would know the facts of the case.

The reality is a mother lost her son. Pretty sad the last words that guy got to say was "No!"

I agree, but after re-watching the video just now (first watched it when I woke up this morning), the driver of the Clio simply didn't look. They were both in the wrong.

probably, as a cyclist see people misjudge speed all the time, something about 2 wheels seems to make people assume you are travelling slower than you actually are.

But at 60mph, he would have still been 5-10 miles back down the road and the car would have pulled out in an empty space and never had to see the bike.

But... but... if a butterfly flapped it wings in China

Driver is an idiot, biker was an idiot. It's only a shame that a mother lost a son

It's fairly obvious from the footage that the bike was a considerable distance away from the car when the car made the decision to turn in. It's unrealistic to expect the driver to see a small but very fast moving object hurtling towards him head on where there's little movement across your vision. Massive injustice to prosecute the driver when it was the bike's fault 100%.

Pretty grim, how on earth the driver didn't see him coming is beyond me.

Yes he was riding too fast, but had the Clio driver not been utterly incompetent this discussion wouldn't be taking place.

Incompetence kills.

Yes the guy on the bike was going too fast but the driver said he didnt see him?

I dont understand, the only place you should be looking when making a turn into oncomming traffic like that is.... towards the oncoming traffic, people like the driver of the car shouldn't be on the roads.

Maybe he looked forward, saw nothing, or a bike REALLY far away, glanced to his right to make sure no one was pulling out of the turning he was pulling into, started making the turn, looked back, too late to do anything about it.

During that quick glance (2/3 seconds?) biker would have covered 100 - 150m.

Know when it's safe to go fast.
Know when it's safe to pull out.

Both are numpties. But still a shame nonetheless.

That's chilling..! :(

Though I can't help but think that it should be less "Think Bike" and more "Think about not riding your motorbike like a tool".

Rider was a moron for doing 100mph. Sure a 60mph crash is bad too, but there may have been a chance. He would have also had more time to react and avoid a collision.

At 60mph the bike would have covered barely 75 meters in the few seconds before the impact.

Compared to the nearly 200 meters covered in the 4 seconds before impact.

At 200 meters away a bike would have been barely a spec in the distance. There is no way on earth the car driver would have been able to see him clearly and certainly would not have expected him to be in his face within 4 seconds.

You can blame who ever you want, but the single factor that lead to the death of the biker was his speed. The car driver should have seen him approaching though but obviously wasn't looking.

I was on a jury for a similar event biker going 100+ and a van cutting across his path, we found the van drive not guilty in 5 seconds flat.

The C.P.S. have to charge the car driver, as he did cut across the bikers path.

also he played stupid and said he didnt see the bike or the car behind it. Basically admitting to not paying attention to the road.
