Need some recommendation on somewhere to stay in new york. Managed to book a return flight for next for £258 so all we need now is somewhere to stay, ideally somewhere that is nice but fairly priced.

I was also thinking of going on American site to book the hotel as opposed to booking via a UK site, would there be complications doing this?

Flight is unbelievably cheap; it's got to subsidised or an air mile contribution.
Taxes on a long haul flight are more than that.

We stayed here:-

Middle of Manhattan, overlooks Central Park. Fantastic hotel, our room had an amazing view over Central Park in the winter time. Not too expensive. Only thing to point out is it isn't smack bang in the middle of the city near Times Square etc so a walk is required to get to places like that. But then that's half the fun of a holiday to NYC - exploring!!

Just did a little search on the edream site mentioned in the link above and I'm not sure I'd feel safe purchasing a ticket through them. Good luck to those who do though!

When we went, we found it far cheaper to get to rent an apartment, but then there was 4 off us.
And that's an insanely good flight price.

We stayed at Helmsley Park Lane Hotel

Think it was ~£100 a night. Pretty much the centre of Manhatten, very close to the Ritz Hotel (Home Alone 2), the zoo, ice rink etc

Edit, it was £555 for 4 nights

We looked at doing that but then discovered it's illegal for people to rent an apartment to you if your stay is less than 30 days. You wouldn't get in trouble as such but if they were caught out then you'd find yourself on the streets looking for a hotel.

We decided not to take the risk particularly as the decent ones seemed to only want cash on arrival at a separate location.

Just did a search on edreams and actually only comes up £60 cheaper for the dates we are going. We had booked from Dublin in the end because it was about £100 cheaper than flying from Heathrow. The added benefit being we do our security checks in Dublin rather than JFK :)

That simply isn't going to happen, they really don't care.
It's easy to shut them down if they want as all the addresses are on loads of advertising websites. It's a recent law ~2years, that isn't enforced. More of you there are the cheaper it works out.

But yeah fair point, pointing it out.

Just did a quick check on Virgin website itself to see if there was much difference, comes up about £440 for me, compared to the £236 on edreams, though reading some reviews, sounds like you book with edreams, and they cancel, and you have to chase to get your money back.

We stayed at the Best Western President Hotel.

Recommend staying there as the price was competitive and the location was fantastic. Rooms were average, however we weren't in there long because the location was that good.
