Microsoft to buy Mojang?

What a waste of money MS have truly gone mad  why not spend that on PC gaming instead not a short term flavour of the month!

This short term flavour of the month have reach beyond the home PC gamers.

The reach extends into young kids that the more grown up MS don't necessarily have the tools to reach. Schools are using it as part of creative / logical teaching too.

Definitely worth 2 billion, if not more.

So how do they get any return on that investment then? It may occasionally be used in school, but it's mostly an indie building game.

What does that do for MS?

It'll be down to marketing and the news buzz that MS now owns Minecraft is enough to get younger generations associating to MS.

As for the real mechanics to getting further return of investment... I am not in the know but look at MS portfolio, apart from Consoles, they don't have a deep enough reach to kids, they can exploit it with marketing associations to products. Who knows?

For all we know, this is a marketing stunt and that alone is enough to justify 2 billion dollar investment.

Look at FB and Oculus Rift, makes no sense but we're not in the know, so we can only guess what they're doing. My money's on marketing and reaching the MS brand to kids. Call it their long game if you will.

Everyone has their price. I believe Valve tried to hire him but he turned that down. I guess once someone waves a huge mouth watering wad in front of his face he'll give in. The game is so popular and successful though (even more so than 'AAA' crap that gets churned out by some big studios) that he knows it's probably best to keep it at this point but who knows. If it's sold though that'll be it for the franchise and it'll be milked to hell and back.

Will it be converted to .NET instead?

I hope not. Everytime my teenage Nephews visit they want to play MC on my PC. I'm thankful MC can run on Linux Mint at this point in time which is what I'm using on my everyday use rig right now. If MS knock this on the head, I hope for their sake my Nephews will have lost interest in MC by then as I don't want to let them use my encoding rig which does have W8.1 on it. I'll turn my back & they'll have gone onto a dodgy MC mod site & bang! ******locker virus on my encoding rig & 2.5TB's worth of MKV's encrypted.

Nephews will also be skint as MS will think of some way to empty their pockets.

Definitely a sell out and hypocrite if true, but who could blame him for the money.

All seems very odd to me, is there really that much life in Minecraft, and if not why invest in a company that's pretty much just had one great idea?

Amusing that he criticized Microsoft for the Windows store and its latest operating system but he's still happy to take their money.

Though as most of you have said its a ridiculous amount of money. Losing your integrity but being set for life.

I can't see this making much sense for Microsoft though.

I can see this going very badly, game will be locked down, micro transactions added and even possibly monthly subs. Minecraft will gradually die out after that. Really don't like the game myself but my lads not going to be happy!

Taking it to the extreme, microsoft might even try and make new versions xbox only, they need to recoup a lot of money so quite possible they will.

Interesting this news came out on the day Apple unveiled the iphone/watch. I know they're not linked but certainly diverted some attention.

Personally never played the game but i like what MS is doing these days so i think they will treat it with respect. Xbox will probably get early releases but i can't see exclusivity happening.
