Going to look at a bmw 535d sport 06 with full history, 110000 miles on it in black with full leather. It's due in at local garage tommrow. It's had new software on I drive and full service and full tyres have just been fitted and is apparently mint.

It's going to be around 6495 and provisionally offering around 5300 for my civic type s.

Has anyone had a 535 and can offer any suggestions if what to look for and thoughts on the price. The mileage I don't think bothers me as long as it's been serviced correctly and no issues with braking and suspension systems

It does sound far too cheap.

I guess if you've got a bundle of cash aside and are willing to take a chance it might be considering, but go in eyes open

It does sound cheap to me too. But so long as you are aware of the costs of ownership, then why not? You already know it's 110k, so long as it's serviced appropriately, it should easily be good for that again.

Never had the 535d, but did have a 335d and it was a weapon after a remap. Was as fast as my 4.2 V8 S4 I would say (I had them both at the same time, but obviously couldn't "race" them myself). There can be issues with these cars, and engines, so best actually looking around an owners club for more info. Here is probably as good a place to start as any : http://e60.5post.com/forums/index.php

Certainly can't imagine it being a waste of time, it could be a great car. Equally, it could have a couple of expensive problems come up in the next few years. So really worth checking to see whats been done and what might be needing done in the future. Could be worth asking them if you can take it to BMW to inspect it. They will no doubt be wanting to fleece you, so will tell you everything it needs doing.

Not many engines nicer than the 35d IMO though. Although I get it that you'd rather have a 530i or 535i. Neither of which would suit me, and therefore might not suit the OP either. The only engine in the range better, IMO would be that from an M5, and that is not yet a £6.5k car.

There is NO guarantee that this car is either tatty or going to be a money pit. It's obviously worth a look at for the OP. You're forever banging on about how BMW's are overpriced, this could just be sensibly priced no?

Thanks I've had a 523i and a 535i in the past so I'm aware of costs but also aware that are bullet proof if looked after. 535i had 135000 on clock and never had any issues with it till exhaust went.

If it's as good as garage says it and has full decent history then for the money seems cheap.

Well I can only go off my previous experience and the two I bought were bullet proof and didn't cost me anything beyond normal servicing. Maybe I'm lucky or I'm choosy in what I buy. There are bargains out there and just because it's 6499 doesn't automatically mean its rubbish, it's definatly worth look and could be a very clean example
The swirl flaps have also been done on it I'm told.

The last two have been petrols, don't think you can apply the same reliability to the diesels. They've got a high pressure injection system and DPF to worry about.

Haha, bulletproof? Nothing of the sort. Especially an 8 year old cheap end of the market 535d.

Wow that sounds like a very snobby comment Fox.. Ive had old BMWs before now including a E39 M5 with 155K on it and it was cheap and still drove like new. (And was bullet proof)

I would recommend the OP to make sure it has got full service history preferably with BMW.

Other than that the 35d are a cracking engine but expensive if they go wrong.

How is it possibly snobby? My 530i has 200k on it.

Old BMWs are not bulletproof, stuff can and does go wrong. For an enthusiast this is not an issue, but many people buy older diesel ones for low costs which I just don't think you can count on them offering.

Again your M5 was a petrol engine not Diesel.

I'm a member of a BMW forum and a while back there was a topic about reliability of the cars. There were quite a lot of posts from owners with 10+ year old cars who had owned them a long time without any major bills, but do you wanna know what they all had in common? Every one of them were petrol engines, no posts from diesel owners with 10 or 11 year old cars they've owned years without any problems. Ageing BMW diesels are not low maintenance and even though the 35d engine is a great engine, there's a lot that can go wrong with it and repair bills can run into the thousands quite easily, the BMW forums are full of posts.

I also agree that 6.5k is very low for an 06 535d and wouldn't expect it to be a great example.

Cheers

/facepalm squared.

Nothing will drive like new on 115k, what a silly thing to say unless of course you think that nothing has worn or seen any use during said 155k miles :D
