would i be silly to buy gpu now?

I would say the best time to buy a new GPU is now the 280 and 280x are both eop and stores are off loading them cheap so get one while you can.

hi
I would buy now before the new gpu's arrive.
Prices are low and i just got a pair of gtx 780's
if the 3gb is not enough for you then wait and pay a lot more.

Not sure if the savings are across the board, some 780 Ti's (reference) seem now sold out. I was considering getting a second EVGA 780 Ti SC (reference cooler) but only OC seem to have them(and only a few left) and the price is still not massively reduced. I did see non SC's being sold for low £400's elsewhere and considered getting one of those and hopefully OC'ing to the SC clock

I may be completely wrong here, but I thought the SC version was simply a slightly factory overclocked regular GPU.

If I'm right I'm sure you could easily clock a normal version to the SC level.

Or am I wrong and its beefed up a little more?

Sometimes, yeah. Having trouble?

Yeah, it's just a jerky mess.

I don't want to spend time troubleshooting it though as many have said it's the game.

Was just wondering how you found trifire with it?

Though I think I will be spending most of my time on mound by flame - for which I have to disable crossfire entirely :D

Download CTE or wait for next patch.

I think trifire (or even xfire) may be a bit buggered with mantle in BF4 at the mo for whatever reason.
Was playing the other night with just a couple of cards and it got worse as it went on with hitching/random low fps until it was unplayable.

I then switched to DX and it was slick as you like...
I'm sure it's just a temporary thing as it's usually pretty bang on with mantle.

I am assuming you were using mantle btw :D

Sorry for off topic.

Nope, tried both.

I can get high fps but there is frequent bouts where fps just plummets 30% or more, making for horrible experience.

Was hoping you would say was dame for you on both api, so didn't suspect was problem with my system :)

Oh well, can't be bothered trying to fix it for bf4 as long as I can play other games.

There is a system memory leak present in Battlefield 4 when using Mantle. Dice are aware and are working on a fix. I'm hoping it will be available when the next big patch is due, which should be sometime this month. If people are having this issue (where Mantle performance degrades the longer you play) i recommend using DirectX11 for now, which is unaffected by this issue. A handy way to check if you're suffering from the memory leak is to press ctrl + alt + delete and check how much system memory Battlefield 4 is using. It should be around 3-4gb maximum. As you can see from my screenshot below when i reported the bug, i was using a lot more than that which was causing fps drops as more memory was being used.

Given the next Nvidia series is due very shortly (at least paper launch anyway) I would at least hold out until then to see what the GPU landscape looks like.

If you must get something now get either a decent custom cooled 290 (Tri-X for £260 gets my vote) or a custom cooled GTX780 for just over £300. Performance is similar across the board so just go with which you prefer.

Had to get rid of my 780 Lightning as it wouldn't fit in my new case, stupidly bulky card , just purchased a MSI R9 290 GE (on special offer), hopefully it should arrive today and will tide me over until we see a genuine step up in performance.

i had originally planned to buy my first gaming desktop this week but i honestly feel like i should wait and see what is happening with gpu's and etc until i pull the trigger on it,

i assume you guys know more than i do about what's going on and release dates and etc, i'm quite patient and i've waited ages to get a gaming desktop, whats another month if you get what i mean?

basically, are new gpus on the horizon in a month or so?

If you haven't had a recent gpu and use something old like hd 2000 series or up to 6000 series then a 290x for 270 quid is a bargain will keep you happy for a few years and the performance will be immense and a lot faster than anything you have previously used.

But for me with two 7950s, my cards performance is just slightly higher than one 290x so I don't want to pay for two 290x's to double my performance I will wait till the new cards and I won't be upgrading untill one gpu is double the performance of a 290x.

Would you guys still say it's worth waiting if you're going low-end? I want a card for my Steam Machine, so I'm looking at the 750 ti (quiet, low power use for HTPC). Currently using HD 4400, which is fine for Far Cry 2 and Lego Harry Potter but I'd like to play Tomb Raider in the next few months. Happy to wait a bit though.
From what I've read, the low-end cards aren't due a replacement - so should I just go ahead, or will their prices come down too?

never had my own desktop mate, so any thing will be a jump, always had family desktopetc but havn't had a family pc in 3+ years, had laptops since then though but not for gaming. always been a console gamer so i feel like having best of both worlds, only 19 and got some money spare so looking into a decent desktop.

Nope, get buying now, good deals abound, all both teams are doing now is rebranding old tech and selling it at new tech prices.

For example AMD just brought out a card that's next to no better than the cards it replaces with with less VRAAM.

I can't speak for NV, but greats deals on 280xS and 290s right now, as well as 290x someone mentioned earlier.
