What's with the Three contracts? £99 upfront cost is ridiculous.

Given the choice I'd rather pay a bit more upfront and have a cheaper monthly contract (sub £25), however not sure I want to blow £600 in one go for a sim free iPhone 6. I'm happy to spread the cost a bit over 2 years with a contract as I'm never not going to have a contract....I just begrudge having to pay £40 and upwards a month when all I really need is data and a few text messages and minutes thrown in.

Maybe once they're available to buy from the shop next week Three might be a bit more forthcoming with a better deal over the phone?

So we have an O2 mast 200 metres away and the tesco deals look great. Is there a downside to them if they use the O2 network?

No cost upfront and £45 per month for the 64gb iPhone 6 seems unbeatable doesn't it?

For those waiting for Three...

Plans are as follows (per their customer services phone line) for an iPhone 6 64GB. Knock off £5 a month for 16GB version.

UL mins/UL txt/UL data is £50/month plus £99.
UL mins/UL txt/2GB data is £45/month plus £99.
UL mins/UL txt/1GB data is £43/month plus £99.

They no longer do the 600 mins plans.

For that pricing I've given up and ordered on Apple. Gotta wait til mid-October now :/ Might try the store on the day.

Just to grab this post as an example, it's a £1299 total over 24 months for an iPhone 6 64GB with unlimited texts, data, minutes.

A SIM-only tariff with the same allowance would cost £552 (£23 per month) + £619 for the handset, for a total of £1171.

The savings are obviously there if you go the SIM-only and buy the phone route, but it's only a ~10% premium. Being offered a £5 per month discount on the Pay Monthly price would almost offset the savings.

I don't know if this is a result of SIM-only tariffs being a hell of a lot worse than they used to be, networks wanting to cash in on the data revolution or what. It doesn't seem like it's been that long since a £35 monthly spend over 12 months with a free phone was average or even expensive, but obviously the whole smart phone thing has happened since then.

I wouldn't mind so much if customer service wasn't universally terrible across the board.
