iPad not charging?

I've been given an iPad (I believe 2 - it's white and model A1430) that appears to not charge. It recognises a USB cable has been plugged in but I can't seem to get anything other than an empty battery icon with a tiny bit of red to show.

With the USB cable plugged in I get a blank screen and pushing the sleep button gets the empty battery icon to show for a second before it disappears.

I've tried holding the sleep and home button to force it into recovery mode but with no luck.

Any ideas? It must be well out of warranty.

My sons kept doing this, I used my Apple Mains Socket (the big one) and a genuine Apple Charge lead left it for around 24h on mains charge and it sprang back to life.

I've got both of those so will give it a go, the person who gave it to me said they'd tried to charge it but could easily have been with a dodgy third party charger and I was just having a play plugging it into my MBA.

Yeah I phoned an a place in Rickmansworth who do Apple replacement stuff and they kept saying the charge connector is probably dead and will need to be replaced.

Try it on a long charge with the mains before doing that - I was at a loss thinking I'd need to stump up and buy him a new one!

Trying to use a small mains charger, pc, usb nothing worked bar the big mains socket. Now it charges fine on everything. Must give it a jump start type charge.

Something that I tried with an ipad 2 when I thought the battery had died was to heat it up on a electric blanket whilst connected to a mains charger and it sprang to life after a few hours.

Have you tried blowing air into the socket to clear out any dust/dirt that could be clocking the connector?

Also, my iPad won't charge via USB, only from a proper wall socket. I thought this was normal for iPads ...?

Mine is plugged into my PC as we speak charging. Not sure tbh I thought any USB socket would charge it.

My sisters did this after she left it to go flat as a pancake. We had to leave it plugged in using the iPad mains charger for a good couple of hours before it sprang back to life
