*** The Official BlackBerry Z10 & Q10 Thread ***

The reg made a good point about it being used as a 'second device' - it has the dimensions, battery life, build quality, professional aesthetic etc that you would want as a modern-day PDA.

Whether thats something (business) consumers are going to lap up is the gamble

That phone is terrible.
It's probably one of the worst phones I've seen.
It looks almost square
Sharp corners. I have recently found this to be style over ergonomics

I felt the same way at first, the phone is not for everyone. All I can say is dont knock it till you've tried it.

Design story:

Its on clove for under £500. I was expecting a bit cheaper though.

also:

Looks like something that would be great for work or the sofa but not something i see the mass market buying to carry while they're out and about unless it comes with the best man/girl bag ever gratis.

I don't see why people on this forum have to go into a thread, dedicated to a device, piece of software etc, and just say negative things.
The PS4/X1 threads are prime examples.

I'm not saying that every post needs to be super positive, but please. No need to come in and just slate something that you don't like.

Haters gonna hate, nothing new here:p.

Anyhow i was at the launch of the passport at Selfridges and spent a good hr or so playing around with one. Let me make one thing very clear, this phone is not for everyone and therefore will get the negative reactions from certain people.

Yes its big ie wide but amazingly quite thin considering the size of it. Its a sturdy device, feels very nice in the hand. For the people who havent held one, get your paper passport out and thats what it is like to hold. Is it a one handed phone for use?? dont be stupid...of course it isnt but it can be held with one hand.

I absolutely love it, its quirky and had a lot of people talking about it...its generating interest and from what i saw today in Selfridges...quite a long line up...they sold out within 2 hrs. I dont know how many they had but they didnt have enough to satisfy demand today. Perhaps they are holding back stock, who the hell knows...i dont work for Selfridges.

From my time spent with the passport, i thought it was something different. Yes there is a learning curve as the keyboard is only 3 rows but the keyboard is something else...it acts like a trackpad so swiping down will bring up numbers, swipe down again and it brings up special characters. Swipe sideways and you can delete words, double tap the keyboard and it brings up a bubble to edit, copy or paste text etc etc. Works also in the web browser, you move up and down on the keyboard and the screen scrolls up or down.

Screen is stupidly sharp, i thought my z10 was sharp but this is sharp sharp. Battery is a huge 3400mah so will have enough juice to get you through a day or more. My Z30 has a 2880mah battery and that easily gets me through a full day of work and more.

Anyhow thats my thoughts on the passport, will i get one?? yep because as i use a lot of spreadsheets in my working day, this phone is a freaking godsend. I could have bought one today but i thought £530 is a bit too high a price, other online retailers have it for £484 but i ordered one tonight from the blackberry shop for £440 which i think is about right price wise.

Will this phone grab back a huge market share??, no i dont think it will as its not meant for everyone ie its not in competition with the iphones or Samsungs of the world.

As for being ugly?? i can see why people might think it is, like i said the passport wont appeal to everyone. But having played with both iphone 6's...im sorry to say those are some ugly phones. God knows what apple was thinking changing the design from the 5s to what it is now. The 6 plus is a monstrosity and both 6's are begging to be dropped with that shiny alu back. The funniest thing ive read today is the 'bendgate', how apple ended up making a bendable phone without realising is just too funny.

One thing i will mention is that i remember people slating the Samsung Note series, a bloody huge brick of a phone but now seems to be very popular, im hoping this will happen with the passport as well.

But despite my opinions on the new iphones, i dont go and troll the apple forums saying how ugly it is.

Anyhow im looking forward to getting my passport next week sometime, hopefully my trick on the blackberry store has worked ie changing the currency from GBP to Euros then paying via paypal:D. Probably find out tomorrow if they have accepted the order lol.

I almost went and bought one from Selfridges today but backed out when I saw the sim free price was £40 less online. Going to wait and see what contract deals are available from CPW at the end of the week.

Do we know which networks this will be coming to?

I've still got a soft spot for Blackberry from the Bold and Torch days. I have yet to try any BB10 device due to the app gap but I love how the Passport is proud to be a Blackberry and not trying to be like the rest of the smartphone world!

I feel like I'm indirectly being a troll because I'm calling it "fugly" but everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'll have you know that I've actually had a Blackberry for every phone since I've had a smartphone (Curve 8900 with the trackball that I miss every day, Bold 9780 with it's sleek looks, Bold 9900 with touchscreen & keyboard and now Blackberry Z10). Having used an Android and an iPhone there is one thing that I can't live without and that is the hub. All BB OSes have had some form of it, but it really is amazing in BB10. I'll be buying a Classic as soon as it's released.

From things that I have seen online, only Vodafone will be stocking the Passport for the foreseeable future. But as we all know CPW will be stocking the device by the end of the month. So I'm not sure if they will offer the Passport on other networks apart from Vodafone?

(Sent from my Z10)

I'm on Three & due an upgrade, so that's slightly disappointing. CPW don't even seem to offer Three plans from a brief look on their website :(

Buying SIM free would always be the cheapest option in the long run but I understand some people can't afford that, including myself.

Upgrade to an iPhone, sell the handset, use the gained money to buy the Passport SIM free?

I don't think it's ugly at all, it has a function that gives nothing to form and thus wins absolutely the function game, as a work based unit the passport kicks ass and I'm tempted to say any other "work phone" is a perk or unnecessary in reality, teachers, the NHS, site engineers should love it.

Well with the new 10.3 OS that comes with the passport and the other BB10 models getting 10.3.1 OS later this year, the app gap has been closed somewhat as the amazon app store will now come pre-installed on the passport and future devices.

Ive sideloaded the amazon app store on my z30 a while back and i also have snap which i sideloaded onto my Z30. Im not a huge app person myself but majority of the apps i have on my S3, i now have on my Z30.

Also with the 10.3 OS android apps now work much faster, open faster etc. Sure the amazon app store isnt as good as say the google play store or the apps store on iphones but its not that far off imho.

The problem with the Amazon app store on BB10 is that some of the APIs are missing, for example Amazon Maps API or the Amazon notifications. This means a lot of apps don't actually work fully.

Is that with the new 10.3 OS or earlier??, if earlier then yes there was problems with it but now with 10.3 and amazon being more closely tied in with the BB10 ecosystem, those issues shouldnt arise. From what i have read on crackberry, a lot of the apps that didnt work now work perfectly well.

I wont know for definite till next week when i get my passport in my hands then i can test/try and see if the problem exists.

But as i said im not a huge app fan, so as long as the apps that i have now on my Z30 work on the passport then im happy enough with that.
